Don Victor Shepard

   Don Victor Shepard,  85, of the Futures Group Home, Milan, PA, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2017.     
   He was born July 14, 1932 at his grandparents Summers’ farm in Troy Township. His early years were spent at home until he was overcome with sickness and hospitalized. 
   In his later years he has been cared for by Futures Community Services, Martha Lloyd Day Care and Group Homes.
    Don enjoyed being with those in his family home care. His family is grateful to the Futures and Guthrie Hospice Staffs who provided Don’s care as extended family.
  Don is survived by a sister Virginia and husband Paul Shapiro, Wysox, and sister Rosemary in the Philippines; nieces and nephews, David and Pamela, Roger and Lynda, William, Nathan and Jennifer;  there are also numerous surviving grand and great nieces and nephews
      Don was preceded in death by his parents, Dean Chamberlain and Minnie (Summers) Shepard, a sister, Verna Ann and his brother David.
   Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., Troy, PA 16947.     
    Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery with a memorial service to be held at the convenience of the family.
​    Donations in Don’s memory may be made to Futures Community Services, 23 Main Street, Towanda, PA 18848 or to Autism Organization of the donor’s choice.

Ginny Bonnell

      Virginia "Ginny" Bonnell passed away on Friday evening October 27, 2017.
    Friends and family are invited to a celebration of life for Ginny this Saturday November 11th at 1:00 pm at the LeRoy Independent Baptist Church.

Jane “Toby” Selinger

   Ms. Jane “Toby” Selinger passed away peacefully on October 25, 2017 at Troy Community Hospital surrounded by family.  Toby was born April 4, 1937 in Lenox Hills, NY to the late Mortimer and Nanette Selinger.  
    In 1944, at the age of 6 years old, Toby moved to Troy and became a life-long resident of Martha Lloyd Community Services, where she spent 74 happy years.
    Those who knew Toby would describe her as sweet and loving with a touch of spunk and mischief.  Toby always made sure to let those she cared about know that she “loved them to pieces”.  She enjoyed spending her free time stringing beads and buttons, coloring, and “shopping”.  Toby also enjoyed music and singing for others when asked.

   Teresa (Mcgee) Bailey, Millerton, PA,  78, passed away, October 22, 2017 at Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wellsboro, PA.  Teresa was born on January 11, 1939, the daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Kehrer (Mcgee) Ayres.
  She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Jim and Anne, Troy, Tim, Gillett; daughters and son-in-law, Edie Smith and Don Bement, Millerton, Sharon and Mike Steever, Telford, PA, Betsy and Byron Button, Tioga,PA, Christine and Dan Cross, Tioga; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Shirley Mcgee, Towanda, Joseph and Julie Mcgee, Troy; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Richard Allen, Towanda, Teodorie Tilly, Arnot, PA; 2 half-sisters, Susan and Kevin Shedd of Williamsburg, VA, Juellen and Paul Davis, Athens, PA; several nieces and nephews; many dear friends; a special friend Sharon Smith.
​  Teresa was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years James L. Bailey, sister, Anne Cook Tilly, brother in law, John J. Cook; brother, Jack Mcgee; granddaughter Amber J. Button; great granddaughter, Violet E. Button.

Mable Porter Shedden

   Mable Porter Shedden,  87, Canton, PA passed away at home while surrounded by loved ones on Friday, October 20, 2017. 
​    Mable Shirley was born July 30, 1930 on Armenia Mountain near Alba, a daughter of the late Loren and Hazel (Dunbar) Harris.  She was employed by Canton’s Swayze Folding Box Co. until its closure as well as being a well-known waitress at the former Hickock’s Restaurant.  Mable always had a smile for everyone.  She will be lovingly remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and for being feisty; Mable told it as she saw it.  She enjoyed cooking, reading, watching birds, collecting cookbooks and most of all loving her grandkids.

John P. “Coconut” Vanderpool, Sr.

    On  October 19th, 2017, John Paul Vanderpool, 56,  Towanda passed away unexpectedly at Towanda Memorial Hospital.   
    Known to his friends as “Coconut”, he was born August 4th, 1961 in Sayre, and was the son of Walter and Eliza (Johnson) Vanderpool.  
    For most of his working life John was a house painter, but his career was cut short by his illness.  However, John was never one to allow himself to be confined and controlled by his infirmities.
    He lived his life to the fullest, experiencing and enjoying life’s pleasures every day.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He also enjoyed watching NFL games on TV, and was an avid Steelers fan, and watching his own grandsons playing football, as well as his granddaughter who is a cheerleader.  He was loyal to his community and was a devout follower of Black Knights football.
   John was a devoted father and grandfather who strived to be independent despite his physical limitations, and was truly an inspiration to his family and friends.

Shirley Young

    Shirley Young, 90, Troy, formerly of East Smithfield, died October 19, 2017 at Bradford County Manor, Burlington Twp. 
   Shirley was born January 19, 1927 in Elmira, NY, a daughter of Rex and Mary Ellen (Smith) Garrison. She was the widow of Charles Young who passed away in 2009. 
   Shirley worked at American Silk Label as a weaver before her retirement, and was known for her pranks and rooster tape she played each day at the end of her shift. She was a member of the Wetona Methodist church, enjoyed doing needlework, sewing, camping, and bird watching
   Shirley is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and JaNell Young of Burlington; a daughter, Bonnie Avery of Troy; eight grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn (Merle) Welch of Troy and Carroll Passeri of Homosassa, FL. 
    In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Dale Young in 2006, and a son-in-law, Jack Avery in 2016.   A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Wetona Cemetery.

Richard Lloyd Groover

Richard Lloyd Groover, 78, of Canton (Union Twp.), passed away at home October 16, 2017 while surrounded by his devoted family. Born December 20, 1938 at the family’s home near Gleason; the same home where Richard lived most of his life.  “Rich” or “Dick” to family and friends, was one of four children of the late Edwin and Frances (Kilbourn) Groover.  He graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1956 and played in the first Canton/Troy football game designated as the “Old Shoe Game”.  On Sept. 23, 1961, he married the former Sheryl Hansell in Grover.
 Rich’s calling in life was always dairy farming and his beloved lands of Rockside Farms.  In earlier years he was employed by Jones & Brague Mining Co.  and was a logger with his father.  Later Dick worked as a meat cutter at Flickinger’s in Troy and then worked at the Super Duper in Troy and Blossburg.   Dick will be lovingly remembered for his kind hearted, easy-going manner and he made friends easily. He loved his family, especially the grandkids and enjoyed visiting with them.  Dick and Sheryl also enjoyed traveling the United States.  He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Ogdensburg Church of Christ, Mountain Run Hunting Club and the Canton Moose Lodge 429.

Richard "Dick" Bailey

Richard “Dick” Bailey, 84, long-time resident of LeRoy, passed away October 11, 2017 while surrounded by loved ones at Monroe Regional Hospital in Ocala, Florida. 
  Richard, also known as “Dick” or “Chet” to family and friends, was born November 24, 1932 in Powell, PA, a son of the late Aaron W. and Ethel I. (Stone) Bailey.  He was a 1950 graduate of Towanda High School before serving our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  On April 20, 1957 he married the former Patricia A. Morse in the East Canton United Methodist Church.   They shared over 60 wonderful years together and raised two children.  In early years, Dick worked at Canton’s Bellows Valvair.  He then was an agent with Prudential Insurance and Securities until retiring after 23 years.  After retiring, to keep busy he worked as a security guard for the DuPont Co. in Towanda.
 Dick was very active in his community and was blessed with many friends.  He served as LeRoy Twp. Constable for many years, was a life-member of Canton’s V.F.W Post 714 and the Wheel Inn Club in Roaring Branch.  Dick was a long-time member of Mountain Top Hunting Camp and a former director and president of Canton’s Rod & Gun Club.  He was active in the Canton F. & A.M. Lodge 415, the Scottish Rite in Towanda and the Williamsport Consistory. He was a former director of the Canton Area School Board, a Canton Moose Lodge 429 member for many years and a Mid-Florida Lakes Homeowners Association member in Leesburg, FL.

Candy Jo Moyer Brown

  On  Wednesday, October 11th, 2017,  Candy Jo (Moyer) Brown passed away, surrounded by her loving family at her Mansfield residence, following a courageous battle with a debilitating illness.  She was 59 years of age.  
​  Born July  21st, 1958 in Troy, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Iona (Fitzwater) Moyer.  Candy was always interested in helping others, so as an adult she pursued a career in health care, earning her CAN degree.  She had been employed at Martha Lloyd Services for many years, and later with ELCOR in Horse-heads, NY, retiring in 2003.  Candy enjoyed doing craft work, which she offered for sale at various local festivals.  She was also an expert at crocheting .  She enjoyed fishing, was an avid Steelers fan and owned an extensive collection of teddy bears.  Her family was of paramount importance, especially her husband, children, grandchildren and her faithful canine companion, Rudy.  She was in love with life itself.  Candy was also a woman of faith, and was an active member of the Austinville Union Church.
