Born and raised in rural Canton, Pennsylvania, Bill became an Eagle Scout, and was an avid basketball and football player. After graduating from Canton High School, Bill attended Princeton University, where he received his bachelors and PhD in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduating, he worked as an engineer for United Technologies in Hartford, CT. In 1973 he took a job with Exxon Research and Engineering in Linden, NJ retiring in 1998. Upon retirement Bill and some of his colleagues formed their own company, Fuel Technology Associates. Dean L. Johnson, Sr., 72, Troy, PA passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Robert Packer Hospital. Dean was born September 4, 1944 son of the late Leon and Esther (Eddy) Johnson. Dean was a US Army Veteran serving two tours during the Vietnam War. He was an M.P. in Germany and a former officer with the Maryland State Police and the Canton, PA Police Department. For many years Dean owned and operated Deano's Service & Repair in Austinville. In his spare time Dean enjoyed boating on Lake Ontario, and enjoyed his daily visits with all his friends that stopped by his repair shop. Survivors include two sons, Dean (Annette) Johnson, II, Austinville, Ben (Heather) Johnson, Arnot; daughter, Tina Gillis Johnson, East Canton; brothers, Donald (Carol) Eddy, Gary (Donna) Eddy, Duane Johnson; sister, Judy Withey all of Austinville; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Gerald. Jane Bresee died quietly at her home in Sheshequin Township on Thursday, January 26, 2017. She was 86 years old. Jane was born in Coryland, Pa, in the farm home on May 27, 1930, the daughter of Fred and Ruth Benson McClure. As a young girl growing up near Coryland, she attended the Coryland church where her Christian faith grew and strengthened. A graduate of Troy High School in 1947, Jane attended the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing in Elmira, NY, receiving her RN in 1950. Jane worked as a nurse in Dr. Brown's office in Troy until marrying Bruce Bresee in 1951. Bruce brought Jane to his family's dairy farm in Ghent, Pa, where she embraced the roles of farm wife and mother. A keen interest in education and being an avid reader led her to serve as a board member of the Mather Memorial Library and the Bradford County Library. She was a charter board member of the Northern Tier Hardwood Association. Jane was also active with the League of Women's Voters and The Pennsylvania Farmers Association. Jane's "Farm Story" column in the Daily Review became a favorite in Bradford County. A writer with a personal, easy-reading style, Jane possessed a gift of turning ordinary farm life into stories with a universal appeal. Jane's writing revealed a kind, generous heart and an inquisitive mind which saw profound meaning in daily life and the deeper facets of her Christian faith. Michael J. Hulslander, 45, Columbia Cross Roads, passed away at home on Thursday, January 26, 2017. Mike was born November 9, 1971 in Waverly, NY son of Judy L. (Hollenbeck) Hulslander and the late James A. Hulslander. Mike was a graduate of Athens High School where he was a member of the basketball and soccer teams. He and the former Melissa Hartranft were married on March 20, 2004 and celebrated 12 years together. Together Mike and Missy dedicated themselves to the Hulslander Family Farm where they worked the farm together side by side. Mike was an avid Penn State Fan, enjoyed attending and watching horse pulls, hunting with his nephews and loved his family deeply. Survivors include his wife Melissa (Hartranft) Hulslander, Columbia Cross Roads; mother Judy Hulslander, Columbia Cross Roads; his four children, the twins, Kylie & Kadyn, Karson and Kendall Hulslander all at home; sister and brother-in-law, Stacy L. (William D.) Houseknecht, Columbia Cross Roads; paternal grandmother, Anna Mary Hulslander, Columbia Cross Roads; mother and father-in-law, Lester and Connie Hartranft, Mansfield, aunts, uncles, several nieces, nephews and friends. Donald R. Bond, 88, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 in Sebring, Florida. He was born on November 8, 1928 to the late Lyal G. and Florence C. (West) Bond. Donald was a veteran serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He and his wife, Vivian, served as missionaries in Peru for 46 years. They were members of the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism. He retired to Sebring in 2003 from Binghamton, New York and was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church of Sebring where he was very active. Even after retirement he and Vivian traveled extensively around the globe teaching and preaching for about 10 years. He served as chaplain at the Avon Park Correctional Institute. Donald was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his children: Steve Bond (Patricia)-Glen Burnie, MD, Linda M. Bond-Sebring, FL, Diane K. Large (Andrew)-Nicaragua, Deborah A. Douglas (Stephen)-Peru; brothers: Duane A. Bond (Josie) Winter Park, FL, Scott A. Bond (Chris)-NY; sister: Sandi Mandarano (Bart)-NY; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held on Monday, January 30, at Maranatha Baptist Church in Sebring with Reverend Terry Price officiating. Interment was at Sarasota National Cemetery. Born April 25th, 1934 in canton, he was the son of Charles and Hazel (Rogers) Bedford. Jack was a graduate of Canton Area High School and served with the occupation forces in Germany in the 1950’s. When he returned to Bradford County Jack pursued dairy farming. He was the consummate outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and all of the aspects of nature. He enjoyed softball and bowling as well. In addition to tending his cattle Jack was a salesman for LAMCO wagons and farm equipment. He also served for many years as a school bus driver for the Canton Area School District. Janet Hipple, 80, Roaring Branch, PA (McNett Twp.) passed away Tuesday morning, January 24, 2017 at the Bradford County Manor, Troy, PA. Born September 28, 1936 in Grover, PA, Janet Irene, also affectionately known as “Frogy” by family and friends, was a daughter of the late Arthur and Erma Irene (Elliott) Fields. She attended Canton High School. Janet was a member of Grover’s St. John’s United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed attending the Grover Church of Christ. The wife of the late Willard Edward Hipple, Janet will be remembered as a loving and humble person who thought of others, but her kids always came first. In earlier years, she worked at Canton’s Bellmar Company and later at Canton Manufacturing for many years until retiring. She enjoyed cooking, baking, playing the organ, crossword puzzles, latch hook and all kinds of candy. Janet also liked collecting frog figurines and she grew beautiful African Violets.
