In 1965 he served with the United States Army. He was married to the former Mary Porter and last Sept. 5 they celebrated their 25 anniversary. He was also a man who knew the Lord and was a member of the Calvary Alliance Church in Canton. Joe was a soft spoken, easy going man who made friends easily and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
On the evening of Mar. 29, 2019, Joseph William Walburn, of Austinville, passed away at his residence with his Wife, Mary and son Jerry by his side. He was 75 years of age. Born in Sayre on Mar. 14, 1944 he was the son of Guy F. and Catherine (Gardner)Walburn.

Hulslander, 67, of Troy, Pa. passed away on Friday, Mar. 29, 2019 at the Troy Community Hospital. He was the loving husband of Cheryl (VanEck) Hulslander. The couple married June Dec. 28, 1974 and had 44 happy years together.
Gary was born on May 13, 1951 in Troy, son of the late Frank and Harriett (Bolt) Hulslander. He was a 1970 graduate of Troy High School and went on to earn an Associated Degree in welding from Williamsport Area Community College. Gary’s whole life was about cars. He could be found most of the time at his family’s business, Hulslander’s Garage on Exchange Street in Troy, working on the community’s vehicles. If Gary was home or at family gatherings he was watching racing on TV, and on Friday nights he and his friends would go to the dirt track races in New York State. After retiring Gary was a Car Chaser for Matthews Motors in Covington, Pa., and did excavating for family and friends. Marvin Woodward, 81, of Alba, Pa., passed away Mar. 26, 2019, at home while surrounded by his loving family. He fought a heroic 35-year battle with Heart Disease.
Marvin was born on July 11, 1937 in Big Flats, N.Y. to the late Morris and Dortha Woodward of Alba, Pa. He was a lifelong resident of Alba, where he served on the borough council for over 50 years and attended The First Christian Church of Alba. Marvin leaves behind his beloved wife Clara (Greene) children; Marvin (Amy) Woodward of John's Creek, Ga., Dawn (Scott) Sheppard of Columbia Crossroads, Pa., and Julie Woodward (Le Ann Frost) of Pennsauken, N.J., grandchildren; Lindsay (Ryan) Vrabic of Nashville, Tenn., Valerie (Jameson) Lietzke of Marietta, Ga., and Chad, Cole and Riley Sheppard of Columbia Crossroads, great-granddaughter; Olivia Vrabic of Nashville, Tenn., as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents Marvin was predeceased by his siblings; Mildred (Bob) Bastion of Canton, Ivan Woodward of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Alma Smith of Albuquerque, N.M. Joyce D. Pratt, 84, of Troy, Pa. was called home to Heaven by her Lord and Savior on Monday morning, Mar. 25, 2019 from the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Born in Checkerville, Pa, Aug. 23, 1934, Joyce was a daughter of the late Ralph and Evelyn (Wood) Dunbar. She was a graduate of the class of 1953 from Troy High School. On Oct. 11, 1953, she married C. Richard Pratt in the Bakersburg Community Church. Joyce possessed a strong work ethic all her life. She was employed at Canton’s Swayze Folding Box Company for 23 years and retired upon it closure in 1996. Joyce was active in many organizations including: East Canton Baptist Union Grange, Pomona Grange, State Grange, National Grange, was a Past Matron of Golden Rod Rebecca Lodge and volunteered for the Area Agency of Aging. She enjoyed crocheting and reading. She cherished times shared with her family and attending her grandchildren’s sporting and school events. Shirley L. Fiester, 88 of Elbridge, N.Y. passed away at Auburn Community Hospital. She was a graduate of Canton High School in 1948. She retired from the office at P&C Warehouse.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Reamer in 1995. Surviving are sons Steve (Sandy), Warren, Reamer, and Douglas, daughter Myra (John) Madden, two sisters Marilyn Rumsey and Mary Lou Sechler, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Calling hours were 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 2 in the Elbridge Community Church with a service that followed at 1 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Elbridge Fire Dept. or the Finger Lakes SPCA in Auburn. Kevin Stuart “Doc” Joiner, 62, of East Liverpool Township passed away Friday, Mar. 15, 2019. He was born on Apr. 11, 1956 in the Old Mills Hospital in Towanda, Pa., and was the son of Jane (Ford) Welch of Troy, Pa., and the late Walter Joiner. Kevin was a 1974 graduate of Troy High School in Troy, Pa., and was a former Gaming Dealer at Mountaineer Race Track. He enjoyed listening to Alice Cooper and The Who, watching the New York Yankees and Giants, and loved star gazing and astronomy.
Surviving are three sons, Brandon (Ashley) Joiner and their daughter Astrid of Delaware, Christopher Dagosta of East Liverpool, and Eric Dagosta of Ohio, seven other grandchildren; his mother Jane Welch of Troy, Pa.; three brothers, Harold (Donna) Joiner and Alan (Sharon) Joiner, both of Troy, Pa. and Bryan (Sharon) Joiner of Canton, Pa.; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Joiner and his step father Alton Welch. A memorial service to honor Kevin’s life will be held at a later date at the convenience of his family. Doris L. (Boyd) Hulslander, age 88, of Elmira Heights, N.Y., formerly of Covington and Mansfield, Pa. died Friday, Mar. 15, 2019 at Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, N.Y. Doris was born on Mar. 27, 1930 in Grover, Pa., a daughter of Robert and Eva (Elliott) Boyd. She was the wife of the late Frederick L. Hulslander who died on July 23, 2007.
Doris is survived by her son John Hulslander of Elmira Heights, N.Y.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis (Eileen) Boyd of Fayetteville, Pa., Larry (Karen) Boyd of Whitehall, Pa., Dennis (Vickie) Boyd of LeRoy, Pa.; sister and brother in-law Betty (Allen) Taylor of Canton, Pa.; and special friend Lyn Silvernail of Horseheads, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister and brother-in-law Sandra Jones in 2015 and Harry Jones in 2017. Jasper S. Smith, 95, Reverend Emeritus, well-known and respected resident of Canton Township, Pa. was called to Heaven by his Lord and Savior on Friday evening, Mar. 15, 2019 from his home while surrounded by loved ones.
Jasper Sidney Smith was born in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, near Hughesville, Pa. Nov. 22, 1923. He was the elder son of the late Sidney David and Mertie May (Derr) Smith. By the time Jasper was 15 he did all the farm work with horses due to his father’s illness and death. He attended school for seven years at Laurel Run, a one-room schoolhouse, and graduated with honors from Hughesville High School in 1941. In October 1944, Jasper moved to Bradford County to work as a dairy milk tester with the Bradford County DHIA Association. In 1949 he served a year in the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia earning the rank of PFC. Jasper remained in the Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1954. On Sept. 2, 1950, he married the former Lela Virginia Castle in the Hughesville Lutheran Church. He now joins his beloved Lela who passed away Nov. 25, 2015. Jasper will be lovingly remembered by all that knew him as a friendly, fair man with empathy for his fellow man and community. He journeyed through life guided by his faith in the word of God. Family was very important to Jasper and part of that love was his passion for researching both his and Lela’s family genealogy. Patrick “Timothy” McLaughlin, age 63, of Shunk, Pa., passed away on Monday, Mar. 11, 2019 on Route 414 in Roaring Branch, Pa. He was born on Aug. 21, 1955 in Clearfield, Pa., a son of John McLaughlin and Mary (Elbell) McLaughlin. Tim was the husband of the late Gertrude “Kitty” McLaughlin. He was a water company truck driver and a veteran of the US Navy having served 19 years, including during the Vietnam War. Tim was a member of the American Legion Post #0945 in Canton, Pa. and an NRA member.
Tim is survived by his sisters Paula (Ted) Bowser of Lake Mary, Fla., Susan Hamilton of Trout Run, Pa., Julie (Bob) McDonald of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother Jeremy McLauglin of Canada; several nieces and nephews; three grandchildren Debbie, Dal, Jennifer; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother James McLaughlin and sister Lisa Baker. In keeping with Tim’s wishes, there will be no services. Fleck, who passed away in 2011. She was a graduate of Troy High School in the class of 1954.
Martha was born in Towanda, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 21, 1935 to the late Henry S. and Mary (Taylor) Darrow. Martha had worked as a secretary for Heritage Village in Bloomsburg and in medical billing for Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. She then enjoyed living in Florida for almost 30 years. While in Florida she was involved in numerous activities. She had been a member of the Red Hat Society, Newcomer’s Club, and sang with a chorus group that entertained many area nursing facilities. She also started Friends Helping Friends in her over-55 community. |
