They met in Doris’s hometown of Elkins, WV where Jake was stationed as a cadet flight officer during WWII. Doris said that Jake, who was a terrific jitterbugger, literally danced his way into her heart. They corresponded throughout WWII while Jake was stationed in England as a bomber pilot, and Doris worked as head secretary to the Vice President of Purchasing at Glenn L. Martin.
Doris Elaine Hanger Young, 91, passed away on January 31, 2018 in Naples, FL. She was born December 15, 1926 to Robert Luther Hanger and Hannah Grace Jones Hanger in Elkins, WV. Doris had one sister Betty McGrane of Colorado Springs, CO.

(Raymond) Okula, 80, 0f Troy, PA, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the Bradford County Manor. She was the loving wife of Stephen C. Okula. The couple married May 17, 1958 and had 59 happy years together. Audrey was born on October 13, 1937 in East Moriches, NY, daughter of the late Henry O. and Audrey I. (Jessup) Raymond. For many years she was a Customer Service Representative for General Electric and was an Avon Sales Representative. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Troy and taught Sunday School there. Audrey enjoyed talking about politics including the Pro-Life movement and Racial Equality. She liked watching both horse and auto racing, and was a big Dale Earnhardt fan. She and Stephen raised and showed German Shepherds nationwide and was an officer in many dog organizations. Audrey volunteered at Rainbow Riders in Troy. After failing health took them to the Bradford County Manor, Audrey and Stephen were seen daily holding hands and watching the Catholic Channel on the television. As a supportive grandmother Audrey could always be seen at her grandchildren’s events, activities, and performances. Clarence "Stub" May died at home on Monday, January 29, 2018, at the age of 85, in the care of his wife and four of his daughters. A student at Troy Area high school, he played the clarinet in the school marching band, and enlisted in the Air Force prior to his 18th birthday. He then served in the Korean War, last as a staff sergeant, whereupon he received an honorable discharge. Following his discharge he married Vivian Inman, Canton, PA, and took up residence in Troy, PA. Clarence and Vivian had one son, Matthew, and four daughters, Beth, Deborah, Virginia, and Rebecca. Clarence had a kind heart and an easy-going disposition, no doubt a result of raising four girls. He was always ready with a smile, or a laugh, or a rhyme. He could strike a conversation with anyone at any time. He made people feel at ease. More than anything else, Clarence loved to spend time with his children and their children. In his younger years, Clarence enjoyed woodcraft and making furniture. He once took up hunting, but gave it up when he realized that he just didn't want to harm any creature. He was a proud Steelers' fan, and also enjoyed watching basketball and college football. On any given year, he could never quite get over losing the shoe to Canton. During the early morning of Monday, January 29th, 2018, lifelong Leroy resident, George D. Wilcox, 87, passed away peacefully at Bradford County Manor. Born in LeRoy on June 12, 1930, he was the son of Earl and Hattie (Haflett) Wilcox. George was a 1948 graduate of Canton High School and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Bobbee Spencer, and together they raised two sons and a daughter. He was employed in the dairy industry for forty-six years as a dairy barn inspector and as a dairy farmer in partnership with his brother at Fivebrooks Farm in Leroy. He was a life member of the Innes Hose Company and served as an active firefighter for a number of years. George also served a number of terms as a member and officer of the Canton Area School Board. He was an active member of the Deer Crossing Detachment of the Marine Corps League. George was also a man who knew and loved his Lord Jesus, and was a longtime, faithful and active member of the Canton Ecumenical Parish. He enjoyed hunting with his sons at the family cabin, tending his lawn and beautiful flowerbeds, and wintering in Cape Canaveral. He particularly enjoyed reading local and military history, was a Civil War re-enactor serving as lieutenant with the 141st Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was a member and volunteer at both the Leroy Heritage Museum and the Bradford County Farm Museum in Troy. Carol (Little) Rockwell, 86, of Canton, PA passed away Monday afternoon January 29, 2018 at Guthrie Troy Community Hospital while surrounded by loved ones.
Carol was born August 6, 1931 in Hillsgrove, PA, a daughter of the late Otto and Marian (Rightmire) Little and step mother, Mariam Little. She was a 1949 graduate of Benton High School. Carol attended Lycoming College in Williamsport and graduated from Mansfield University with a Bachelors degree in Education. She was married to James H. Rockwell for 63 years before his passing on April 17, 2017. Carol owned and operated a fabric shop in Canton for several years. She made beautiful quilts and enjoyed knitting and reading. Carol was a very knowledgeable person who enjoyed many interests. She was a big fan of Fox News and always appreciated a good discussion about politics. She loved to play tennis; Carol and Jim would regularly play tennis in Williamsport during the winters. They were also able to travel extensively, especially enjoying river cruises. Susan Ann Moyer, 63, Columbia Cross Roads, PA, died on January 28, 2018 at her home.
She was born on September 9, 1954 in Johnstown, PA, a daughter of Stephen and Thelma (Link) Moyer. Susan was the wife of Kenneth Auker and they shared 30 years together. She was a chef at Lambs Creek in Mansfield, PA and enjoyed cooking and baking. Susan was a member of Holy Child Catholic Church. She liked doing handy work such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, refinishing furniture, stained glass, caned chairs. Surviving are husband, Kenneth; daughter, Heidi Ann Mathieson, State College, PA; grandchildren, Wyatt Moyer, Anthony Mittelman; brothers, Stephen (Debbie) Moyer, Portage, PA, Mark Moyer, Portage, PA; sisters, Nancy (George) Bolvin, Elmira, NY, Bernadette Timmerman of NC, Patricia Voss, Portage, PA. She was preceded in death by a sister Sandra Coudriet and parents. Family and friends are invited to attend a mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Monday, February 5, at 11AM at Holy Child Catholic Church, 242 S Main St, Mansfield, PA, with Rev. He was born Jan. 8, 1934 in Wellsboro, the son of John H. and Mabel Rose Spencer Root. He was a lifelong farmer, worked at Westfield Tannery, Ingersol-Rand, Corning Inc., Schneider Transportation and Curtiss Artificial Insemination. He was a jack of all trades, built his own home and was always willing to help family and friends. He was a 1952 graduate of C.V. High School. He was a 61 year member of the Victoria Grange #1193 and served as Master and State Advocate from 2001 till present. William G. “Bill” Avery, Sr., 97, formerly of Burlington/Ulster, Bradford County, passed away peacefully at home Friday evening, January 26, 2018. Bill made his home these last years with his daughter Alice and son-in-law Leon Mosher, Sr. in the village of Stowell, (Laceyville) Wyoming County, PA. Born September 6th, 1920 the seventh of eight children to William G. and Mary Dowd Avery of Wells Twp., Bradford County, the family removed to Lockwood, NY in 1924 where they farmed until the Senior Avery’s untimely death at age 48. Bill worked for many farmers as he grew to manhood, took any job available. When taking a job with his brother working a farm for a widow, Bill met and married Marian Alice Thorp of Daggett, PA in 1939. In the early 1940’s another farm job brought Bill to West Burlington, where he worked and purchased his own farm, the pride of his lifetime. A member of the West Burlington CO-OP; Bill also served for 18 years as a school director for Troy Area Schools. In later years he served as a bus driver 15 for years for parochial schools in Elmira, NY, retiring at age 77. Barbara Conrad, 71, Canton, PA peacefully passed away January 24, 2018, at the Bradford County Manor following a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara Ann, “Barb” to family and friends, was born October 4, 1946 in Canton. She was a member of Canton High School’s graduating class of 1964. Barb possessed a strong work ethic all her life. In early years she was employed in Williamsport by Cobbler’s Shoe Co. and the Avco/Textron Corp. She also worked at Ward Manufacturing in Blossburg and Canton’s Parker Hannifin Corp., most recently working for Kmart in Wysox. Barb was also an accomplished bowler, receiving many awards and trophies over the years. She was a member of Canton’s Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) and the International American Machinist, IAM Union, Local 1190. Family, home and especially her grandchildren were very important in Barb’s life. She will be remembered as a kind person who would offer help to anyone in need. Barb enjoyed reading, researching her family genealogy, riding motorcycle, bus trips and traveling with friends and family. Alan “Roy” Cook, Sr. Age 81, of Columbia Cross Roads, PA, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He was the beloved husband of the late Nancy A. Cook and was married 45 years. Roy was born September 18, 1936 in Lansdale, PA son of the late Arthur and Sara (Cunningham) Cook. He was a graduate of Lansdale High School. Roy worked for T.D. Keyser, National Rolling Mills and Penn Troy Machine Company. Roy and Nancy were foster parents and enjoyed traveling. Roy was a beef farmer and enjoyed working on his farm he was also an avid bowler from his teens through to 2013. In his early adult years he was a stock dragster and street racer and loved socializing in the local community. To Roy family was everything. His family includes his children, Kathleen Sullivan of Columbia Cross Roads, PA, Wendy (Neil) Maloney of Waaia, Australia, Alan Roy (Cynthia) Cook of Gillett, PA, Vicki (Shawn) Neitz of Livonia, NY and Kevin Cook of North Wildwood, NJ, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews. Roy was pre-deceased by his parents, a brother, Robert Cook, his loving wife Nancy A. Cook and a special niece, Sharon Cook. |
