Lyle W. Brown, 69, of Canton, passed away on Monday, October 25, 2021 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Lyle Wesley was born September 29, 1952 in Sayre to the late Arnold and Lucy Mae (Rutty) Brown Sullivan. He attended Canton and Williamsport Schools.

Surviving Lyle are his siblings; Tony (Sarah) Brown of Canton, Brian Brown of Shunk, Juanita Brown of Ohio, Rocky Brown of Florida and Denise (Howard) Losinger of Covington, several nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts, Beverly Allen and Jane (Ed) Moore both of Canton.

Zachary D. Roan, 33, of Canton, gained his angel wings on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Zachary Dean was born on April 1, 1988 to Rodney Roan and LeAnn (Good) Black, at the Irwin Army Hospital in Fort Riley, KS. Zach was born while his dad was serving in the United States Army, however, everyone would tell you that Zach was the real soldier. Zach graduated from Canton Area High School where he ran the ”Zach Shack” and sold school merchandise. He was a lifetime member of the Red Run Rod and Gun Club and an honorary member of the Ralston Hunting Club.

Zach enjoyed the outdoors and looked forward to hunting, fishing, riding his four-wheeler and hanging out with the guys at the cabin.  Zach loved watching movies, Home Alone being one of his favorites. He had a warm-hearted smile, an unique personality and loved people unconditionally.

Surviving Zach are; his mother, LeAnn “Mick” (David) Black and his father, Rodney (Amy) Roan, step-brother; Nyan Black, step-sister; Alyssa (Black) Smith, grandmother; Carol “Kate” Roan, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and caregivers, who all loved him dearly.

Zach was predeceased by his grandparents; Dean and Donna Good and Richard Roan, uncles; Eddie Holmes and Rick Roan and a cousin Ryan Holmes.

Carol Brooks, age 65, of Ogdensburg, PA, passed into the presence of Jesus on October 24, 2021.

She was born Carol Virginia Jackson on June 12, 1956, in Blossburg, PA, to George and Virginia (Payne) Jackson, also of Ogdensburg. 

She is survived by her loving husband, James; her children, Christopher Brooks and Ryan (Jamie) Brooks; her grandchildren, Evan and Avery; her siblings, Elaine (Gary Shay) Foust and Dennis Jackson; numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by both of her parents. 

Carol was the youngest of three children, and, with the exception of Jim’s brief time of military service, spent her whole life living on her family’s farm.  She loved gardening, hunting, fishing, and spending time with her family.  She had a great appreciation for the beauty of nature and a kind and generous heart.  She worked in retail (Ames, Shanley’s), as a bus driver, and at factories (Eureka, Ward Manufacturing).  She was even named the Mayor of Ogdensburg once!

Brenda Bates was born September 12, 1963 in Penn Yan NY to Charles & Patricia Bates.  She passed away at home surrounded by family on October 18, 2021 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.  

She lived her childhood years in Troy PA where she was a star athlete in several sports.  Brenda attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA where she continued her athletic career scoring a then record 1075 career points in basketball also helping to lead the team to two NCAA Tournaments, one NCAC Championship, and one Women’s Keystone Conference championship.  She also was a stand-out softball player, earning varsity letter all four years.  In 1983 the team finished in fifth place at the NCAA Championships where she earned all-tournament team honors.  Brenda was profoundly moved when she learned that the current Allegheny Softball team dedicated their season to her.

Brenda lived much of her adult life in Southern Maryland where she worked as a Special Education teacher for many years.  She was grateful for all of the lasting friendships and fun times while there.

In 2014 she moved to Abington PA and established her own pet sitting business.  She loved all of her animals and it was obvious they felt the same way.  She quickly made friends of the pets and their owners and will be greatly missed in the neighborhood she grew to love.

Brenda was predeceased by her parents and her brother Chuck.  She is survived by her partner Sue Daly, her brother Chris, brother Craig and sister-in-law Shelly Bates, nephews Dylan, Devin & Derek Bates, several cousins and lifelong confident/cousin Phoebe Brown & Ellie Brown.

John E. Hite of East Canton, died unexpectedly following complications resulting from Covid-19 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. John passed away while surrounded by the love of his family on Friday evening, October 15, 2021. He was 56 years of age.

John Esmond was born on January 1, 1965 in Waverly, New York; one of seven children to the late Kenneth S. and Frances (Carnwright) Hite. He attended Canton Area Schools and graduated with one of the best classes,1983. On September 5, 1987, John married his high school sweet heart, the former Tami, his “Rose”, Woodward. Together they shared 34 years together and raised three sons and a daughter. John was an extremely hard worker all throughout life. He was employed by various companies including; Mel and Jay Good (Goodview Farms), Cliff Good Construction, Goodwin Pump, NY Penn Veal, Empire Livestock, Woodward Bus Service, Stierly Farms, Hess Farm Equipment and most recently, Pelton Trucking.

A true outdoorsman, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and snowmobiling. He could often be found at McDonald’s getting his favorite, their quarter pounder and fries. John was a farmer at heart and a gifted carpenter and mechanic. If ever called upon to help someone, John would drop everything and assist anyway possible. Most important was his family. His grandchildren were very special and PopPop genuinely loved spoiling them, especially at Christmas. He treasured life in a mischievous way and always kept you wondering just what was behind his rascally grin. Perhaps inherited, John was known to be somewhat opinionated and stubborn in a good way. Never afraid to speak his mind or mince words, he will be remembered for telling it like it was. He was truly one of a kind and will be dearly missed by those who had the opportunity to know him.

Surviving is; his beloved wife, Tami, children and their spouses; Brock (Robyn) Hite of Towanda, Jerikah (Neil) Gilliland of Troy, Jakob (Erin) Hite of Troy and Lukas (Ashley) Hite of Canton, siblings; Lloyd (Beverly) Hite, Kenneth (Erin) Hite, Nancy Grimm, Barb (David) Groover, grandchildren; Hudson Hite, Adelyn Holmes, Sawyer Holmes, Elliot Hite, Edison Hite and Emilyn Hite, special nephews; Tyler and Jesse Hite, Logan Rumsey, Cody Groover, TJ, Christopher and Matthew Delgrippo, grandmother in law, Marjorie Wright, father in law and mother in law; Thad and Sheila Woodward, close friends; Harvey Fitzwater, Rick Walter, John Kelley, Gary Walburn, Bill Landon and Gale Kelley as well as several great nieces, great nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Besides his parents John was predeceased by a sister Leone Hite, a brother, Stanley Hite, grandfather in law, Robert Wright and a special niece, Nevaeh Rumsey.

Family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 2021 and noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Drive, Canton. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Good Brothers officiating.

Burial will take place afterwards in the Glenwood Cemetery, Troy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in John’s name to the Stanley and John Hite Memorial Award, c/o Canton High School, 509 East Main St., Canton, PA 17724.

E. Jane Soper, 99, of Ralston, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, October 16, 2021 at the Twin Oaks Personal Care Home in Granville Summit.

Jane was born February 20, 1922 in Canandaigua, New York, she was a daughter of the late William N. and Florence E. (Bailey) Black. Jane attended Ralston Schools and later graduated with the class of 1940. Following high school, she married Gerald L. Soper on September 7, 1940 in the Trout Run Methodist Church.  Together they raised three children and celebrated 43 years together before Gerald’s passing in 1983.

Jane was employed as a seamstress for many years by the former Weldon and Wundies Sewing Factory in Williamsport until her retirement in 1982. Mrs. Soper was a devoted member of the Ralston United Methodist Church, where she sang in the church’s choir until she was 95 years of age and belonged to the Methodist Church King’s Daughters.  She also held memberships in; Trout Run Senior Citizens, Ralston Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and was a charter member, treasurer and historian of the Ralston High School Alumni. Jane loved sing a longs, crocheting, reading and cross word puzzles. She truly loved her family and appreciated their visits, especially while reminiscing and looking over five generations of photos that she possessed.

Surviving is; two children, Bonnie C. Bryan, Marilynn (Alfred) Route, five grandchildren, James Bryan, Debra Holmes, Kevin Route, Dennis Route all of Canton and Jeremy Soper of Linden. ten great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousin, dear friends and neighbors.

Besides her parents and husband Gerald, Jane was predeceased by; her son, Gary “Butch” Soper in 1982, two grandchildren, Gerald A. Soper in 1968 and Karen M. Bryan in 1970, great grand-daughter, Tatum L. Route in 2003, son-in-law, Ronald Bryan in 2013, siblings, William Black Jr. in 1980, Geraldine Perry in 2003 and Grace Gublo in 2005 and her significant other, Nelson R. Buckwalter in 2019.

Aaron M. Slocum, 37, of Towanda, Burlington Township, passed away very unexpectedly, Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at his residence. 

Aaron Michael was born on May 5, 1984 in Towanda to Wes and Cheryl (Ward) Slocum. He attended Troy Area Schools and was a graduate of the class of 2003. Aaron was currently employed by Cargill in Wyalusing for several years.

Aaron was a passionate outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and jeep rides throughout the area. He was an extremely hard worker and one of the kindest, whole hearted and most easy-going people you would ever meet. He truly looked forward to time spent with his family, especially his brothers.

Aaron is surviving  are his parents; Wes and Cheryl Slocum, two brothers; Curtis Slocum (Samantha Burdick), Nick Slocum (Samantha Ostrander), grandfather; Evert Slocum all of Towanda, grandmother; Janice Ward of Granville Summit as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Aaron was predeceased by a grandfather; Robert Ward, grandmother, Doris Slocum, uncle; Tim Ward and an aunt; Linda Slocum.

Marjorie Ann Pepper, 84, of Williamsport, passed away peacefully, October 12, 2021 at her home. 

A viewing was held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2021 at the Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr. Canton. A graveside service to honor Marjorie’s life followed and she was laid to rest next to her mother, Adelia (Fitch) Pepper, in the East Canton Cemetery.

A funeral service will be held for Dennis Dale Thomas at Davis Funeral Home in Riverton, Wyoming with Pastor Dave Case presiding.

It will take place on October 19th, 2021 at 2 pm with internment at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton, Wyoming. A visitation will be held from 1 pm - 2 pm on October 19th at Davis Funeral Home. 

Dennis passed away on October 9, 2021, at the Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana at the age of 79.

He was born September 11, 1942, in Troy, Pennsylvania to Lynn and Dorothea Thomas. Dennis was blessed with six siblings. Carol Ward (Deceased) of Florida, Ellen Forbes of North Carolina, Alice Coe of North Carolina, Paula Young of Michigan, Lois Baker of New York, and Fred Thomas of California. 

Dennis served in the Navy on USS Forestall for 4 years during Vietnam. He married Mary Ellen Thomas (Smith) on June 9, 1973, in Troy Pennsylvania, and gained two stepsons - Richard (Lori) Case of Vernal, Utah, and David (Ruth) Case of Riverton, Wyoming. While in Troy, he enjoyed working as a postman. Dennis’s good friend, Bill Moffat, encouraged him to move to Wyoming. Dennis and Mary first moved to Rock Springs/Farson Wyoming area while Dennis worked at Bridger Coal. This allowed them to be close to their kids and grandkids. In 2004 Dennis and Mary moved to Douglas, Wyoming to be closer to their grandchildren. 

Dennis was known as “Grandpa Denny” to his 4 grandchildren Kristin (Randy) Watson of Riverton, Seth Case of Riverton, Annie (Roy) Nelson of South Jordan, Utah, and Dayton Case of South Jordan, Utah; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Watson and Ainslee Watson both of Riverton. He loved sharing his passions with them, such as camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, competitive shooting, coin collecting, gold prospecting, artifact finding, and NASCAR. Grandpa Denny was known to be a little mischievous with his classic phrases and various board games, but he always had ice cream or Oreos for the end of the evening. 

Mary preceded Dennis in death on April 1, 2020. Dennis chose to lay Mary to rest in Riverton, Wyoming. He resided there for the last year and a half of his life to be close to Mary and several family members. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Fred Thomas, Seth Case, Dayton Case, Ryan Watson, Randy Watson, and Roy Nelson.
A memorial to the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Marie E. Farley, 49, of Canton, formerly of Philadelphia, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 8, 2021.

​Marie Eileen was born June 16, 1972, in Philadelphia to the late Francis and Joanne (Hafer) Farley. She attended St. Hubert’s High School and was a graduate with the class of 1990. Following high school, she attended La Salle University in Philadelphia, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy in 1996.

Marie held many jobs including positions in banking, publishing and with the University of Pennsylvania. Most recently she was employed by the former Canton Grill and the Park Hotel, also in Canton. Marie was passionate in her love for animals, especially her beloved cats.  She enjoyed traveling and had traveled extensively in the U.S., in Asia, and to a lesser extent, in Europe. 

Surviving Marie are her brothers; Joseph (Fransiska Santi) Farley of Philadelphia and John (Christine Rosenwasser) Farley of New Hampshire, fiancé John Harold of Canton, nephews; Jude and Paul Farley and Sean and Alex Farley, several cousins and dear friends.

Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by a brother Francis (Robin) Farley.

A memorial service to honor Marie’s life will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Dr., Canton, PA 17724.

A private burial will be held at the family’s convenience.
