Barbara J. Shanley

     Barbara J. Shanley, 90, of Troy Pa. passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 at the Bradford County Manor.
    Born July 17, 1928, Barbara Jane was a daughter of the late Floyd Donald and Muriel Belle (Morgan) Thomas.  On Apr. 23, 1949, she married Alvin “Lefty” Shanley in St. Aloysius Catholic
Church in Ralston. Lefty and Barb owned and operated Shanley’s General Store in Ogdensburg for several years.  She also worked as a home health aide for Bradford County Home Health, for a time, and later worked at Milky Way Farms Restaurant near Troy.  
    Barbara was a member of Canton’s St. Michael’s Catholic Church and their Alter and Rosary Society, Bradford County Daughters of the American Revolution, Canton’s Garden Club and the Canton Red Hatters. She enjoyed many interests including cooking, entertaining and flower arranging. Barbara and Lefty loved to travel and especially enjoyed their trip to Ireland.

Kenneth E. Brown

  During the first few minutes of Tuesday, Sept, 25, 2018, Kenneth Eugene Brown of Canton passed away unexpectedly at Troy Community Hospital.  He was 66 years of age.  Born Apr. 26, 1952 in Troy, he was the son of James D. Walburn and Susie Brown.  
    Kenny was a man blessed with a strong work ethic.  Throughout his adult life, he was a tractor-trailer driver, construction worker and a farm hand until a disability necessitated his early retirement.      
    Kenny was a quiet man with the patience of a saint.  He made friends easily and was always ready for some good-natured ribbing.  He was also fond of sports on television.  Among his favorites were Yankees baseball, Giants football and NASCAR.  He was an avid fan of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr.  ​

Joy A. Teeter

  Joy A. Teeter, 73, of Lake Wynonah, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, at her residence. Born in Troy, Dec. 4, 1944, she was a daughter of the late James & Loretta Adams and the wife of Fred L. Teeter. The couple was together 50 years.
    Joy had been employed at Craftex Mills, Auburn. She also accompanied her husband when he worked as a truck driver, and, in later years, she drove truck by herself. Joy delivered newspapers in Lake Wynonah for 18 years. 
    In addition to her husband, she is also survived by three sons: Kevin Ayers & wife, Lori, Canton, Kent Ayers & wife, Cathy, Schuylkill Haven, & James Teeter & his companion, Deborah Hahn, Pine Grove, a step-son, Fred L.Teeter, II, Hernando, Fla., six grandchildren: Ty, Adam, Brent, Sarah, Heather, & Nicole, three great-grandchildren: Kairi, Sean, Trent,, two sisters, Donna Shedden, Granville, & Judy Sandor, Canton, Pa., and two brothers, James Adams, Canton, & Joel Adams, Schuylkill Haven.

Rita E. Bustin

On the morning of September 24, 2018, Rita E. Bustin passed quietly into eternal rest at the Robert Packer Hospital surrounded by family and a dear friend Patricia Benson.
​  Rita was born April 27, 1930 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira, NY to James F. and Mary M. McKee Bustin. She spent her early youth in Lowman, NY where her parents farmed and in the late 1930’s the family moved to Troy, PA where they owned and operated a farm until 1969.
  Rita was a graduate of Troy High School in the class of 1947 and soon after she secured her first position in the working world at the Berlinger Silk Mill in Towanda. She remained at Berlinger’s until the mill was destroyed by a fire. After the Berlinger fire she returned to Troy and worked as a telephone operator for the Commonwealth Telephone Company, after which she was employed by Dr. George Lopatofsky as a dental assistant in his practice in Troy. In 1969, after the death of her father, Rita, her mother, and sister Mary moved to Towanda. In Towanda Rita worked for Dr. Nicholas O. Prusack in his dental practice and later secured employment with the Commonwealth Telephone Company as an operator she held that position until Commonwealth decided to close their Towanda office after an employee strike. Rita spent the last ten years of her working career in the employment of Dr. Bart Young in his optometry office.  After retirement she and the Young’s remained close friends.

Andrew J. Pettiee

  Andrew J. Pettitt, age 38, of Tioga, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 20, 2018. He was born on March 12, 1980 in Troy, a son of Steven and Ruth (Perry) Pettitt. Andrew was the husband of Veronica (Miles) Pettitt. 
​   He was employed at Med Plast in Westfield. Andrew attended West Jackson Baptist church. He enjoyed artwork, photography, reading, and working outside on a cool day.

Anne Biddle Preston

 Anne Biddle Preston, 91, longtime resident of Canton, Pa. passed away peacefully at the Sherwood Retirement and Personal Care Home in Canton while surrounded by family on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.     The daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Wilcox) Biddle, Anne Biddle Preston was born in Elmira, N.Y. on Sept. 9, 1927.  After graduating from Elmira Free Academy in 1945, Anne attended Syracuse University, majoring in music and theatre. She was employed in radio broadcasting for two Elmira radio stations, including hosting her own show under the name of Jane Bond. 
  On September 22, 1951, she and Lee Manley Preston were married at the North Presbyterian Church in Elmira, N.Y. and settled in Canton, PA.  Anne and Manley shared over 56 wonderful years together and were blessed with three children: Sandy (Geoff McNett), David, and Nancy (Douglas Lockwood).
​   Mrs. Preston was a choir director for many years at the Canton Church of Christ, an active member of the church and served as a Deacon. She was a volunteer coordinator for the Canton Area School District and piano accompanist and choreographer for the elementary school productions for 25 years. She was also involved in numerous area organizations. Anne traveled extensively with her husband, Manley, when he was President of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association (PBA).

Paul H. Machmer

Paul H. Machmer, 93, well-known resident of the Canton area (Union Twp., Tioga County passed away on Wednesday evening, September 19, 2018 at the Bradford County Manor.
   Paul Herbert, “Paulie” to family and friends, was born December 4, 1924 at the family farm in Ward Township, Tioga County.  He was the last surviving of 13 children in the family of the late Fred S. and Mabel (Mason) Machmer.  On February 2, 1945, he married the former Emma Graham and while in the U.S. Army during WWII, he and Emma wrote to each other every day.  They were blessed with 11 children and 63 years of marriage before her passing on Oct. 24, 2007.  Paul found his calling early in life; he was a life-long farmer.  They established the “Machmer Family Farm” in the late 1940’s.  In earlier years Paulie worked for PennDOT for a short time and also drove the neighborhood kids to and from school for many years.  Paulie was a man who was fair-minded; he believed in diligent work and instilled those qualities on to his family.

Stephen C. MacNett

    Stephen C. MacNett, 71, of Mechanicsburg, died on September 18, 2018.
   A prominent Pennsylvania political figure, Steve devoted his 44-year legal career to working in the Senate of Pennsylvania. Possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of the legislature, legal cases, and historical milestones, Steve was widely regarded as the Commonwealth's constant and unelected "51st senator." He was a trusted friend and advisor to prominent figures of both political parties.
   Steve began working in the Senate as a legislative page while an undergraduate student at Dickinson College and continued as a part-time Senate employee while a student at Dickinson School of Law. Upon his law school graduation in 1971, Steve joined the Senate Republican legal staff. He became General Counsel for the Senate Republican caucus in 1977, a role he held until his retirement in 2011.

Clean Mary Johnson

     Mrs. Cleone Mary Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully on September 13, 2018.
 Cleone was born January 18, 1920 in New Era, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Rodney and Bernice Young Wells. She married Kenneth Johnson of New Era on June 15th 1946. He predeceased her on March 16, 2002 after 56 years of marriage.
 During World War II Cleone was employed by Norden making bomb sights and Schweizer Aircraft manufacturing gliders. She was also employed by Paper Magic in Troy for several years.
    Cleone was a dedicated wife and mother, a wonderful cook (known for her wonderful pies), and loved all the many dogs they had during her life. She was a member of the Windfall Methodist church and taught Sunday school for many years.

Virginia L. “Ginny” Crain

 O​n the evening of Wednesday, September 12th, 2018, Virginia L. (Hakes) Crain of Ralston passed to Glory while at the Williamsport Hospital.  She was 66 years of age. 
     Born January 16, 1952, she was the daughter of Clark and Vivian (Wilt) Hakes. Known to family and friends as Ginny, she was employed by Martha Lloyd Services in Troy, retiring after 26 years as a supervisor of the residential staff. Ginny was also a woman of great faith, and was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Canton Township.  Her faith carried her through life’s tribulations, and on Wednesday evening led her home.
