Paul Herbert, “Paulie” to family and friends, was born December 4, 1924 at the family farm in Ward Township, Tioga County. He was the last surviving of 13 children in the family of the late Fred S. and Mabel (Mason) Machmer. On February 2, 1945, he married the former Emma Graham and while in the U.S. Army during WWII, he and Emma wrote to each other every day. They were blessed with 11 children and 63 years of marriage before her passing on Oct. 24, 2007. Paul found his calling early in life; he was a life-long farmer. They established the “Machmer Family Farm” in the late 1940’s. In earlier years Paulie worked for PennDOT for a short time and also drove the neighborhood kids to and from school for many years. Paulie was a man who was fair-minded; he believed in diligent work and instilled those qualities on to his family.
Surviving are his children, Paul G. (Linda) Machmer of Canton, Emily (Arden) Paulhamus of Williamsport, Curtis (Jana) Machmer of Canton, Michael (Kathy) Machmer of Granville Summit, Julie (Scott) Parker, Sally Route, Kim (Alan) Kendall and Mark Machmer all of Canton, Betsy (Mark) Smith of Williamsport, Sue (Joseph) Lander of Westfield and Brian (Kim) Machmer of Canton; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren with a total of 103 direct descendants; three sisters-in-law, Jessie Herman, Mertella (Tom) Smith, Carol Morgan and many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and neighbors.
In addition to his beloved wife Emma, he was predeceased by 12 siblings, Lawrence (Millicent) Machmer, Robert (Ethel) Machmer, Katherine (Linnaeus) Ervay, Leah (John) Osipovitch, Irvin (Thalia) Machmer, David (Mary Lou) Machmer, Jean (Robert) McWilliams, Irma (Richard) Earley, Harold Machmer, Russell (Ethelyn) Machmer, Mason Machmer and Winifred (Donald) Kutz; son-in-law, Ernie Route; infant grandsons, Brett and Brent Machmer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James Herman, Wellington “Timer” (Ginny) Graham, Elaine (Clarence) Wilcox, Muriel (Robert) Webster, Walter “Jack” (Frances) Graham, Roger “Tink” (June) Graham and Anna (Donald) Renstrom.
Calling hours and funeral service were held Sept. 23, at Pepper Funeral Home & Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Dr. Canton with Rev. Duane Taylor officiating.
Private burial will be in North Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial to the Ward Methodist Church c/o 474 Furman Rd. or to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 72 Elm St. both in Canton, PA 17724.
