Virginia was born on December 27, 1916 in Troy, daughter of the late S. Eugene Stanton and Matie (Marshall) Stanton Newell.
She was a 1934 graduate of Troy High School and 1941 graduate of Mansfield Teachers College. Her teaching career took her from Sayre, to Sunbury, then back home to Troy Area School District where she taught at several of the elementary schools. It was said that the Granville Elementary building, where Twin Oaks Personal Care Home is today, was built especially for her. Virginia retired as Lead Teacher in 1975 after 34 years of service. Virginia was a life member of First Presbyterian Church of Troy and was their oldest member. She had several other memberships including First Presbyterian’s Ladies Auxiliary, Troy American Legion Auxiliary, Troy Community Hospital Auxiliary, Troy Area School District Foundation, Thursday Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Pennsylvania Retirement System, and Bradford County Heritage Association/Farm Museum. Virginia was a generous supporter of many non-profit organizations.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband Lynwood; brother Oliver Stanton, and cousins: Edmund Eugene Stanton, William Thornton Card, Timothy Stanton, and Craig Stanton, along with her closest friend Mildred Wright.
The memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church,Troy, August 2 with her pastor, Rev. Bill Bardo officiating.
Burial will be private at the convenience of Virginia’s family.
