Robert L. Spencer, 80, life-long resident of the Canton,  area (Union Township), passed away at home while surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday evening, April 18, 2018.  Robert Louis, “Bob” to friends and family, was born September 10, 1937 in Blossburg, a son of the late
Lloyd B. and Gladys I. (Miller) Spencer.  He was a 1955 graduate of Canton High School; the first class to graduate from the new high school building on Main St.  Bob served our country in the U.S. Army for four years and was stationed in West Point, NY.  On March 14, 1970, he married the former Janet R. Watts.
Bob was employed by Hess Farm Equipment in Canton until retirement in 2012.  After retiring, he enjoyed many interests and projects, especially making lamps from Sumac wood.  Bob will be remembered for his many contributions of time and experience to the community.

A man guided by his love for the Lord, Bob was a life-time member of the North Union Christian Church where he served as an elder, treasurer and chairman of the board.  He was also a long-time member of the former N. Union Grange No.784 and was treasurer of N. Union Cemetery Association for over 20 years.  Bob appreciated nature’s beauty and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and cutting wood.  He was also the handyman type who could fix most anything he set his mind to, seemingly at the drop of a hat.
In addition to Janet, his wife of 48 years, surviving are their children; Sue Ann (Joe) Smith, Roaring Branch and Ronald Spencer of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; Paul Shedden, Brenda Shedden, Sheila Packard, Anthony Purvis, Patience Matthews, Savanna Purvis, Hannah Spencer, Jocelyn Spencer, Trinity Spencer, Wyatt Spencer and Cayla Smith; several great grandchildren; three sisters; Jean Chilson, Millersburg, Doris (Gene) Rutty, Canton and Dorothy (Vic) Mason, Rochester, NY; several nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and many friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Baby Spencer in 1980 and a grandson, Baby Shedden in 1991.
His pastor, Rev. Duane Taylor and Rev. Thomas Blackall officiated the funeral service on  Sunday, Apr. 22, at Pepper Funeral Home & Cremation Facility, Canton.
A private burial will be in North Union Cemetery.
Those who wish may consider a memorial in Mr. Spencer’s name to N. Union Christian Church, c/o 353 Soper Hill Rd. Canton, PA 17724.  Share memories and condolences at www.pepperfuneralhomes.com
