Born and raised in Troy, PA, he was pre-deceased by his parents Ellsworth and Lula Dunbar. Richard is a graduate of Elmira College and was employed as Bursar. In 1973 he moved with his family to Great Barrington, MA where he was employed by Simon’s Rock College as Comptroller. In 1980 he relocated to Springfield, MA and worked for the Springfield Libraries and Museums Association as the Vice President of Finance for 25 years, retiring in 2005.
He was actively involved in Rotary International for many years, serving as president and actively participating in the yearly Toys for Joy Campaign.
Always a devoted grandfather, retirement allowed him to dote on his four grandchildren whom he cherished. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield, MA and former member of Holy Cross Parish.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Hon. Patricia M. Dunbar; his daughter Alexis Beckwith and son-in-law Jason, and their sons Alec and Quinn; his son Jamie Dunbar and daughter-in-law Elyse, and their children Callie and Padraig. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law James (Susan) Maloney of Tarrytown, NY, John (Joyce) Maloney of Crofton Maryland, Mary (William) Roe of Elmira, NY, Nancy (late Raymond) Kist of Tonawanda, NY, Catherine Maloney of Elmira, NY and Peter (Susan) Maloney, of Cary, NC as well as several loving nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
The funeral was held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home with Liturgy in Sacred Heart Church, Springfield
