Mary, who was called "Sis" by her family and many of her friends, was born in Canton, Pa., the daughter of John and Winifred Deemy. She was a graduate of Troy Pennsylvania High School and The Pennsylvania State University.
In 1954 she wed her high school sweetheart Evan "Jim" Vaughan, now Captain USN (ret.), to whom she was married for 60 years. In addition to her husband she is survived by her children, Valerie (Jon) Monschein, Elaine (Walter) DeLap and James (Eleanor) Vaughan. Her son Andrew predeceased her. She also leaves behind her sister Ruth Deemy, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Mary was a Navy wife, a mother, and a teacher. She was a beautiful and kind lady who loved teaching, reading and working in her gardens. She was also a Nittany Lion and Navy football fan, who enjoyed an occasional glass of good wine. She looked forward every year to summers spent with her children at her cottage on Mountain Lake in Pennsylvania. In retirement she continued to teach in elementary school as a volunteer and worked in support of her local library. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames XVII Century. For many years she was a docent at the DAR Museum in Washington D.C.
