Katherine Hilfiger, 95, of Horseheads, NY, formerly of Canton and Troy, passed away at home while surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, June 25, 2015.
Born March 27, 1920 in Canton, Katherine Rose, “Kate” was a daughter of the late Edward “Chic” and Mazie (John) Smith. She was a 1938 graduate of Canton High School. In earlier years, Kate worked at Canton’s Ben Franklin Store and Canford Manufacturing. She also was a telephone operator for Canton Telephone Co. On March 11, 1967, she married Gene Hilfiger. They shared 43 wonderful years together before his passing on Oct. 22, 2010.

Kate’s family was always very important in her life. She enjoyed reading and playing cards, especially Euchre and 500. Kate possessed a witty sense of humor and could keep up with the best of them and roll with the jokes. She was a former member of Canton’s Order of the Eastern Star Lodge.
Surviving are children, Edward Day, Athens, PA, Dennis (Lynda) Day, Smyrna, GA, Les (Brenda) Hilfiger, Canton and Barb (Charles) Kraus, Millport, NY; grandchildren, Eric (Missy) Allen, Tina (Rob) Burtt, Justin Kraus, Jennifer Kraus (Bill), Mickel (Rancy) Pepper, Tim Hilfiger, Lisa Youmans, Lorne (Maria) Day, Robbie (Melody) Day, Elizabeth (Chen) Li and Michael (Christi) Day; 18 great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter; a son-in-law, Clarence Hunt of Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband Gene, she was predeceased by a daughter, Eunice Hunt and two siblings, Daniel Smith and Emily Sweeney.
Pastor Jody Hilfiger will officiate a memorial service at 1 p.m. July 11 at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr. Canton. Calling hours are 11 – 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Grover Cemetery. The family will provide flowers and suggest memorials in Kate’s name to a hospice organization of one’s choice. Share condolences at pepperfuneralhomes.com
