Picture
John “Jack” Francis Callahan, 84, a USMC Veteran of the Korean War, beloved husband and father and one of Canton’s most interesting citizens passed away Friday, March 18, 2016.   Soon after graduating from Canton High School in 1950, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and earned the rank of Sergeant.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on January 22, 1932, the son of the late Thomas and Florence (King) Callahan. Jack was a well known dairy farmer of Canton.  James Brann, Jack’s cousin, recently said of him “He lit up a room whenever he walked into it”.  On October 25, 1969, he married the former Judy Dick of Hornell, NY.
He was a life member of Canton’s VFW Post 714 where he served as a former Commander, Chaplain and Service Officer.  He was a life member of the Marine Corps League Deer Crossing Detachment in Ralston where he was extremely involved with their Toys for Kids Program.  Jack often was Santa’s helper at their drives and Christmas parties if Santa himself could not attend.  He also was a member of Morris Run’s American Legion 167.  Jack was very active for many years with the local military honor guard.  He was a life-long member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Canton, serving as a former Grand Knight of their Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are: Judy, his devoted wife of 46 years; a daughter, Bridget Callahan of Canton; his son, Shawn (Maren) Callahan of Troy; sister, Joan (Jack) Russen of East Sullivanville, NY, also several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Calling hours were Tuesday, March 22, at Pepper Funeral Home in Canton.  Transferal prayers will be 10:15 a.m., at the funeral home, March 23 followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Michael McCormick as Celebrant.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest your consideration of a memorial to Toys for Kids, c/o Marine Corps League Deer X-ing Detachment, P.O. Box 154 Ralston, PA 17763 or to Southerncare Hospice, 1544 E. 3rd St. Williamsport, PA 17701.   Share condolences at   www.pepperfuneralhomes.com
