John was born in Asylum Township, Pa., on July 14, 1928, one of nine children to James Edward Miller Sr. and Mable Chilson Miller. At age 16, John began working in the community as a painter specializing in painting barn roofs and eventually took on the projects of painting houses and businesses throughout the area. He was well-known for his ability and workmanship and continued his talent from full time to part time painting until he reached the age of 84 years. Along with painting, John was employed by State Aggregates in Wysox for 29 years until his retirement in 1990.
Surviving are his wife Joan Johnson Miller; children Michael J. Miller Sr., Marianna, FL, Laurie A. Taylor and husband David C. Taylor Sr., Leroy, James B. Miller, Gettysburg, John B. Miller Jr. and wife Sandy Barr Miller, Towanda, Chris J. Miller and wife Roxanna, Canton; ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren; brother George Miller and wife Sally of Rome; sisters Ada Shrader, Monroeton, Marie Hoover and husband Chuck, Terrytown, Marge Weber and husband David, Franklindale; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends Mike Sena and Mary Maryott of Towanda.
n addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son David Lee Miller in 1966; brothers James Edward Miller Jr., Donald Miller, Pratt Miller; and a sister Geraldine Miller.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa., with Rev. Thomas Geiger pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Towanda, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
