Born March 24, 1941 at home in Highspire. He married the former Joyce A Nickle of Highspire June 17, 1961, and shared 54 years together. They raised two children.
Most of his life was spent behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer. He spent most nights and weekends under the hood of a car doing repairs out of his garage while he was an employee of PennDOT as a diesel mechanic/supervisor.
He learned to love time spent in the Rehoboth bay fishing for Flounder, or talking to the many campers at the campground. He usually had a pipe in his hand.
Gerald Sr. was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ollie Schmidt, brother, Karl “Jim” Schmidt, and daughter Cynthia Kay Schmidt.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce, a son Gerald Jr. (Paula), a daughter Joi-Ann Butler (Selina), two grandsons Paul (Jennifer), Josh, and two granddaughters Catie, and Rachel. He was also survived by brothers Joseph “Pete” (Roberta) Schmidt, Mike (Joan) Schmidt, and sisters Barbara (Clarence “Shorty”) Hawkins, and Susan (Tom) Morgan, sister-in-law Janet Clark, along with many nieces, nephews, and great nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held in his hometown of Highspire at K.M. Knight Funeral Home on June 7, 2016. There will be a gathering time at 6 PM, with the service at 6:30. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
