Born on February 19, 1923 in Paterson, NJ, George James Lovell was one of four children of the late Ethel Caroline (Berner) Lovell and George Whiting Lovell.
After graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1939, George attended Newark College of Engineering before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific during WWII with the 974th Signal Corps earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. George often said of his military service that it was the most exciting time of his life. He faithfully kept in touch with his Army buddies and enjoyed traveling to their reunions for many years. On August 23, 1947, George married the former Rosemarin “Rose” LeClair in Ridgewood, NJ. They have shared over 68 wonderful years together and raised two daughters.
George also was a talented woodcarver and enjoyed all types of music. In earlier years he had his pilot’s license and flew single engine airplanes.
Surviving are: his wife Rose; children, Lynn Mitchell of Athens, PA and Holly (Kevin) Keegan of Troy; three grandchildren, Cael Keegan (Marla Wick) of Grand Rapids, MI, Brendan (April) Keegan of West Decatur, PA and Meghan (Justin) Leonard of Sherman, PA; four great grandchildren, Eisley, Grady, Keegan and Evie; a brother and sister, Theodore (Joyce) Lovell of Red Bank, NJ and Nancy (George) Ridings of Lincoln Park, NJ,several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nancy; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Alice) Lovell and a son-in-law, H. Kent Mitchell III.
In keeping with Mr. Lovell’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Pastor Nelson Kopatz will officiate a celebration of George’s life at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr. in Canton.
Burial with military honors will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Troy at a later date.
