Elizabeth Lynne Hertel passed away at home on Mar. 3, 2019. Lynne was born 1934 in East Canton, Pa. to the late Davis and Myrtle (Landon) Van Dyke.
She graduated from Canton High School in 1952 and then from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College with a BS in Physical Education. From there Lynne went on to teach special needs children how to swim, a difficult yet rewarding job.
In 1956 Lynne married Ted Hertel of Ralston, Pa., and for the next 20 years they raised three sons in Big Flats N.Y. In the late 1980s Lynne moved back to Canton Pa. to work the apple orchard with her father. She built a life for herself caring for the people and the land she loved.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, walking and spending time with family and friends. She loved to have a house full of people especially her children, grandchildren and her sisters. Many happy summers were spent with them on the family property and what once had been a apple storage was turned into a summer home that everyone could enjoy. In the last years of her life Lynne moved next door into her parent’s house and was able to enjoy life with her good friend, Wolfgang Mehlburg.
Lynne is survived by her beloved sons, Benjamin (Hannah) Hertel, Howard (Johanna) Hertel, and Theodore (TJ) Hertel, granddaughters Cassandra Hertel, Katie Lang Robinson, and Charlotte Hertel, a great grandson, Braedyn Livingood, sisters Nancy Williammee, Virginia Angradi and Susan Schiess and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in the East Canton Cemetery. Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility in Canton is assisting the family with arrangements.
