Born May 30, 1925 in Ogdensburg, PA, Edward Austin, “Ed or Mike” to family and friends was one of six children of Clarence and Emma (Watkins) Austin. He was a W.W.II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Gunners Mate and was a member of Troy’s American Legion Post 49. Ed married the former Dorothy Greenough on April 5, 1947 at the Troy Baptist Church Parsonage. They were married for 69 years. The beloved patriarch of the family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren were great joys in his life.
Mike was a logger all his life and worked for Cummings Lumber Co. in Troy until retiring. From a child on he had a great love and appreciation for horses, especially work horses. He owned and cared for horses into his 80’s. Ed was a member of the New York State Horse Pullers Association.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, surviving are his children; Larue (Carlene) Austin, Big Pond, Wesley Austin, Troy, Ronald (Bonnie) Austin, Columbia Cross Roads, Mickey (Barbara) Austin, Troy, Cinda Baumunk, Troy, Nadine (Tom) Furman, Big Pond, Julie (Jeff) Strope, Columbia Cross Roads; 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; sister, Edna Landon and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Austin, Canton and Shirley Kinsman, Troy; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.
In keeping with Mr. Austin’s wishes, a graveside service at Glenwood Cemetery will be officiated by Rev. Garry Zuber at a later date with military honors accorded.
