She was the loving wife of the late Lew C. Wheeland. The couple married December 5, 1942 and had 56 happy years together.
Doris was born on February 20, 1922 in Cogan House, PA, daughter of the late Ira Arthur and Florence Edna (Connelly) Persun.
She was a 1939 graduate of Liberty High School and also graduated from Lycoming College’s Secretarial Department. During World War II Doris followed Lew all around the country depending on where he was stationed.
Doris was a long time member of the United Methodist Church, attending Bay Village UMC from 1954-64, Ingomar UMC from 1964-89, Wellsboro UMC from 1989-2002, and First UMC of Troy from 2002-present. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the Thursday Study Club, and the Troy Heritage Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lew, their infant daughter, brothers and sisters: Charles Persun, Marion Nienhueser, Carl Persun, and Virginia Wentzler.
Family and friends are welcome to call from 9:00-11:00 AM on Saturday, May 5, at the First United Methodist Church of Troy, 1214 Redington Ave. Troy, PA. Celebration of Life service to honor Doris will be held at the conclusion of the visitation on Saturday, May 5th at the church with her pastor, Rev. Joshua Davinsizer officiating.
Burial will be at 2:00 pm in Friedan’s Cemetery in Liberty, PA. The Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. 1093 West Main Street, Troy, PA has been trusted with the arrangements.
