As a child, she learned many life lessons from her parents. An honest days work for an honest days pay, if it is worth doing it is worth doing well, finish what you start, and hard work never hurt anybody are just a few examples that Carol would exercise her whole life. Carol attended New Albany high school in New Albany Pa., where she graduated May 26, 1943. She subsequently attended the Elmira Business Institute in Elmira, New York completing her studies there the following year.
She was employed briefly by a succession of firms before becoming the bookkeeper for Armstrong's music house in Towanda and Sayre. Carol would hold this position until 1967, when she went to work for the United States Post Office Department in Canton. On Oct 22, 1944 Carol married Burnard Smith of Canton, at the Monroeton United Methodist Church in Monroeton. They began a union that would remain 62 years until his death in 2006. They had 29 nieces and nephews in whom they took great delight. One summer, for example, each age group of five or six children was treated to a trip away from home. The oldest group went to Hershey Park, a trip of approx. 200 mi. Each younger group went on their respective trips until all had participated. In 1971 Carol received a transfer to the Post Office in New Port Richey. There were no female letter carriers at that time and the Postmaster was skeptical. Carol's record from Canton carried the day, however. Carol delivered mail until her retirement in 1990 following 23 &1/2 years of service.
She is survived by three brothers; Kenneth, Morris, and Charles all of Towanda. two sisters; Joyce Richlin of Towanda and Irene Murray of Columbia Cross Roads. 29 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and a brother Earl Brown Jr.
