Carl was born on October 15, 1913, in Sheridan, PA, the youngest child of the late Calvin S. and Elizabeth (Lape) Leitner. On October 27, 1944, he married the former Margaret Cornielson Erd, who preceded him in death on August 17, 2013.
After the war, Carl and Marge lived in Sheridan for a time, then bought a house in Myerstown. In 1959, Carl and family moved to Chestnut Street in Troy, where he resided for over 54 years until he moved to Lewisburg after Marge’s passing. Carl was retired from Chemung Supply, Elmira, NY.
In his younger years, he enjoyed golf, tennis, hunting, and volleyball. He also enjoyed playing bridge and rooting for the Cincinnati Reds. Not long after moving to Troy, he discovered fly fishing and fly tying, which became his favorite pastimes. He was a long time member of Trout Unlimited. After retiring, he and Marge enjoyed many road trips around the country. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, as well as a 67 year member of the American Legion.
Surviving Carl are: a son, James M. Leitner of Lewisburg; niece Rhea (Shultz) Schoener of Womelsdorf; and nephew John Shultz of Lititz.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Maurice and sister-in-law Emily, his sister Mildred and brother-in-law John Shultz, and his daughter-in-law Claudia Ebeling.
The memorial service to honor Carl’s life was held August 24 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 1093 West Main Street Troy, PA. He will be laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery following the service.
