Art was born September 6, 1939, in Alba, son of the late C. Max and Lucille (Andrus) Shoemaker. He graduated from Troy High School with the class of 1957 and served in the US Navy from 1957 to 1960.
Art was a resident of Albany, Georgia, where he dedicated over thirty years as a volunteer. He was involved in many mission trips, received many awards and achievements from Avalon United Methodist Church, Love Thy Neighbor outreach center and food pantry, Salvation Army, Life Line Ministries, Society of St. Andrew, City of Albany Missions Board, and the Boy Scouts of America. In March of 2014 Art was honored with the “Book of Golden Deeds”, Unity for Service, by the National Exchange Club.
Art was retired from HOWCO Supply.
Survivors include his siblings Lorelei (Ron) Colton of Alba, Jeff (Karen) Shoemaker of Daphne, Alabama, Judith (Earle) Brown of Wapwallopen, PA, and a half-brother, T. James Shoemaker, Troy. He’s also survived by three daughters, Lugene (Jeannie) McCartney of Georgetown, Florida, and Shannon Kresge and Carrie Liabak of Lancaster, PA, thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Art was predeceased by his wife Sandra (May, 2008), his son Cory Treat Shoemaker (August, 2014) and a grandson, Clayton Maxwell Shoemaker.
The funeral was held February 20th at Avalon United Methodist Church and internment took place in Floral Memory Gardens cemetery in Albany, complete with military honors.
It was Art’s request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be given to one's favorite food pantry service.
