Alfred O. Horton

1/10/2017

Alfred O. Horton, Sr.,  81,  Cameron Mills, NY peacefully went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Alfred was born February 27, 1935 in Waverly, NY to Clifford C. and Mille R. (Adams) Horton.
He was a 1954 graduate of Canton High School.
He married Charlotte Woodworth on November 1, 1969 at the Hornell Baptist Church.
Mr. Horton served his country in the Army from 1954 to 1958; transitioning to reserves until 1962. He was an innovative tool maker for Corning Glass Work for 35 years, retiring in 1997.
Alfred was also a Methodist Lay Preacher for most of his life, preaching at the Cameron Mills and Rathbone Methodist Churches, as well as filling in at other area churches when needed.
He had a passion for his family, his church, and the many lives he and Charlotte made a difference in. His 40 years as a foster parent is a testament to his character. Alfred never asked anything of anyone. He always made sure that if someone was in need, he was there to help them.
For many years he loved playing Mr. and Mrs. Clause with Charlotte; they both enjoyed bringing smiles to children's faces. He was an avid coin collector and had assembled a collection of antique clocks from around the world. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, listening to country music, singing hymns and splitting wood for his home. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife: Charlotte (Woodworth) Horton; son, Alfred (Deanna) Horton II, Cameron Mills, NY;  daughters: Rebecca (John) Rappleye, Beaver Dams, NY, Jessica (Jim) Richards, Arkport, NY; grandchildren: Samantha, Andrew, Justin Rappleye; great grandchildren: Wyatt, Isaiah; siblings:James(Pauline) Horton, Canton, Dawn(Lewis) Schanbacher, Canton; Clifford (Joan) Horton, Montoursville, PA, Grace Gantt of SC; sister-in-law, Sharon Horton, Canton; many nieces and nephews, and the countless foster children he helped raise that will always be considered family.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Bradley Horton.
The funeral service was held at the  Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, Addison, NY on January 14.
Special recognition to Pam and Dale Woodworth and Tammy and James Hoad and the entire Cameron Volunteer Ambulance Department. Memorial donations can be directed to the Cameron Volunteer Ambulance, PO Box 1993, Cameron, NY 14819.
Kind words or fond memories of Alfred can be offered to his family at www.CarpenterFuneralHome.com
