Alan Lawrence, “Al” to family and friends, was born January 8, 1950 in Sayre. He was the son of Gerald Spencer of Canton, currently of Granville Summit and the late Grace (Finnerty) Spencer. A member of Canton High School’s graduating class of 1968, Al was always the “Stout-Hearted Warrior”. He especially loved football and supported all Canton Warrior sports events. He also reported them, perhaps with a slight bias, in his weekly column for the Canton Independent-Sentinel Newspaper for several years. He was a member of the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) of Canton. He formerly was employed by Jim’s Sporting Goods in Canton and Mansfield locations. Al was active in his community; he was a past secretary and treasurer for Canton’s Lion Club and a past Canton Moose Lodge No. 429 Governor and former secretary/treasurer. Also a great supporter of the Boy Scouts, Al was a troop leader and an Eagle Scout. He was an avid bowler and past president and a secretary of the bowling league. He enjoyed golfing and organized many golf events. Besides Canton Warriors, his teams were the NY Giants and the NY Yankees. Al also was a good cook. In earlier years, he sang in a local band, Witch Duck Road. Al will be remembered as a man quick with the jokes and for his fun-loving nature.
In addition to his mother, Alan was preceded in death by his infant sister, Jean Louise Spencer.
