Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet about 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes – a bit under 1 in every 5 adults, according to the American Cancer Society.
The Union Twp. Historical Society will meet, Oct. 26th, at 1 pm, at the Ogdensburg Church of Christ. Due to construction, the meeting will be held in the basement, which is handicap accessible. Meetings are open to everyone. Area residents are invited to give the gift of life through a blood donation at the American Red Cross Blood Drive taking place at Arnot Ogden Medical Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23. The drive will be held in the Petrie Conference Center on the Medical Center campus.
Interested donors are invited to call 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767) to make an appointment or visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/make-donation to register online. Advance appointments are recommended and walk-ins will be taken throughout the day as staff members are able to accommodate them. Arnot Health is holding a free health screen to detect un-diagnosed COPD. The event takes place from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Nov. 6 in Center Court at the Arnot Mall, Horseheads.
The screening is open to adults 18 and older, whether they smoke or not. Motivational tools to quit smoking will be available. No registration or appointment is required. October was a month of great activity on our ancestors’ farms as farm families worked to put in the winter’s supply of food for themselves and their animals. Harvesting and preserving the crops for use during the months to come was hard work; however, our ancestors found a way to have fun while working. One way was for neighbors and friends to gather for an “Apple Butter Stir”. This allowed the folk to have an enjoyable time while doing the task of preserving the apples.
The 69th annual Burlington-West Burlington Halloween parade will be held Thursday night, October 29th. This year’s parade is to be in West Burlington with line-up starting at 7:00 P. M. and Parade Time at 7:30 P. M. Everyone is encouraged to plan now to participate in the parade or be present to enjoy the celebration. It is not necessary to register before the night of the parade and many cash prizes and surprises will be awarded to the floats, marching units and individuals participating. The parade always features food concessions, a sale of baked goods and free cider and doughnuts for everyone. Anyone who would like to make a contribution to this annual event is encouraged to contact Janell Young at 570-297-4673. The next planning meeting is scheduled for 7:00 P. M. Thursday, October 15th at the West Burlington Township Building. On October 19 an "Improve Memory and Well Being" Class, will be held from 10:30 to 11:15 am at East Smithfield Holistic Healthcare Building, 197 Main St., instructor Irmi Lackner. The Wells-Jackson Lions Club is sponsoring a chicken-and-biscuits dinner on Friday, September 18, 2015, from 5-7 p.m. at the Millerton Wesleyan Church, 5174 Main Street, Millerton, PA. On Sunday, July 20th, 2014, the descendants of Orman and Cora Cole held their 57th annual reunion. It was held at the Bloss Island Park, in Blossburg, Pennsylvania. This year there were 52 members attending. Officers are President Bob Cole Jr., Vice President Bob Cole III, Treasurer Brenda Cole, and Secretary Colleen Cole. Sam Cole was the oldest person in attendance, he is 96 years old. The youngest attendee is Destiny Engel, daughter of Colleen Cole, she's 6 months old. Greg Cole and John Hamlin, from Connecticut, came the farthest. The largest family who attended was the descendants of Robert Cole Sr. with a count of 19 attendees.
