The Friends of Mt. Pisgah State Park will try to present a hands on idea of what life was like on the farm at the turn of the 20th Century. The event is “FREE” and the attendees will be able to help make apple butter by stirring the mixture in the big copper kettle. Jack and Jean Huffman are the kettle masters and will officially state when the apple butter is finished. Crackers will be on hand for those who would like to sample the apple butter. With a donation to the Friends of Mt. Pisgah State Park, half pints of apple butter will be available until the supply is depleted.
Friends will also be cranking home-made ice cream. Plenty of kid power (also those young at heart) will be needed to crank the ice cream freezer. Of course, dips of ice cream will be dished out.
Butter making demonstrations, in an antique glass butter churn, will be given by either the Bradford County Dairy Princess or one of her assistants. The children will be able to help turn the cream into butter and then taste the fresh butter on a cracker.
The “Double Take Band” will be playing your favorite songs from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Chuck & Bob Bastion will be cooking up their famous ham-n-bean soup; volunteers will be there to assist in roasting hot dogs and making s’mores over a wood fire and also pressing apples for cider, which can be sampled.
Pumpkins will be available for the kids to draw faces on, with adults doing the carving.
On October 10th, join the Friends of Mt. Pisgah State Park from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. for their annual “Apple Butter Stir” (which will be held rain or shine) to educate the younger generation, by showing them how our ancestors had fun while working hard.
