The observance followed the parade, which began at the Church of Christ parking lot at about 10 am. The line of march began with Canton Police Chief Doug Seeley in the police cruiser, followed by the Color Guard from the local service organizations, (VFW Post #714, American Legion Post #303, Deer X-ing Detachment of the Marine Corps League), followed by Cub Scout Pack 3, then two floats conveying veterans, followed by a float from the Hometown Heroes group featuring the names of men from the Canton area who gave their lives in America's wars.
There was beautiful weather and a large and appreciative audience for the observance of Memorial Day in Canton on May 25, 2015. The temperature was about 75˚ at the time of the ceremony at Memorial Park, with clear blue skies and a warm sun.

Years ago a young lady named Lorrin I. Porter from North Union, Pa. and a young man named Dean E. Taylor from Grover, Pa. met at a dance held at North Union Grange Hall. Soon this meeting led to a love and courtship that cause the two families to be brought together as they united in marriage.
Winners of the American Legion Essay Contest entitled, "What Freedom Means To My Family" included Kreyanna Bastion, (not pictured) Bruce Comereski, and Alaina Swain. Also in the photo is Linda Perry representing the American Legion. The following are the winning essays. Air Force Airman Matthew J. Smith graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, TX.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Smith is the son of Amy Moody of Gillett. He is also the grandson of Dale and Victoria Carmichael, Lebanon, PA, and nephew of Jamie and Justin George, Mechanicsburg, PA. The airman graduated in 2014 from Athens Area High School. We read “The rainbow fish,” “Barry; the fish with fingers,” and a nonfiction book about fish. The kids got moving to fishing action songs and practiced counting. Fishing for good books at the library is easy; you are bound to catch a fun one. Join us for Learning Time every Tuesday morning at 10 am there’s always something to new to try. On Thursday, June 25 at 7 pm, the Troy Town Band will take the stage at the Troy Area High School Memorial Auditorium to present their Summer Concert. The “re-Union Concert” will feature works of the North during the Civil War and the Soviet Union around the time of WWII. The band will be under the direction of Mr. Robbie Oldroyd. Mark your calendar now—the community concerts are always free and the public is cordially invited.
The Canton Wine & Cheese Committee has announced advanced ticket sale locations for the 2015 Canton Wine & Cheese Festival. Tickets are on sale at the following businesses: Country Ski & Sports in Wellsboro, the Canton, Troy and Towanda branches of Chemung Canal Trust Co., the Canton and Troy branches of First Citizens Community Bank, the Mansfield office of Gannon Associates, the Canton Independent-Sentinel, and the Canton Borough Office. Tickets purchased at these locations will be $12, a $3 savings over tickets purchased at the gate on the day of the festival.
What is “144 Envelopes?” The Rialto Theatre Advisory Committee launched this unique fund raiser at the May 23, Alumni weekend event “ Hidden Stories in the Images of Southwestern Bradford County”, based on a new book published by Leroy Heritage Museum and presented by Matt Carl. Bradford County Regional Arts Council and Rialto Theatre Advisory Committee members, Mary Beth Schoonover and Linda Nickerson provided the information about this unique fundraiser. The reinvigorated Canton Shade Tree Commission would like to invite everyone, who is interested, to join them for a workshop titled: “Inventorying Street Trees with Volunteers” on June 6, 2015 from 9:30-11:30 A.M. at the Morse Arboretum rain or shine.
