The Bradford County Groundwater Study has received broad support from the Bradford County Commissioners, Bradford County Conservation District, the PA Department of Environmental Protection, and the Progress Authority.
In August, Northern Tier Regional Planning and Development Commission, in partnership with Guthrie and the United States Geological Survey, were awarded $173,250 by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to conduct a county-wide groundwater study. USGS is providing $173,250 in match funds while Guthrie is contributing $23,250, bringing the total project cost to $369,750. Utilizing random sampling, the study will test water from private domestic-supply wells in Bradford Co. to characterize the quality of groundwater and provide baseline groundwater quality data. Most of the publicly available water-quality samples were collected more than 30 years ago and do not include measurements of specific chemicals that can be found in wells today. The objective of this study is to characterize the current chemical quality of groundwater from shallow freshwater aquifers used by private domestic supply wells in Bradford County. Well owners that choose to participate in this study will have the opportunity to learn what is in their water as well as ways in which they can address any issues or concerns with their water quality in a comprehensive way. This is a critical piece to developing a baseline that can be utilized by several industries, health care institutions and others to enhance the effectiveness of their work and service. The study will use the same methods and approach as ongoing groundwater monitoring efforts in Lycoming, Wayne and Pike Counties.
