“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.” It is now ten days since Jesus ascended into heaven. Jews from all over the known world were coming together to celebrate Pentecost, where the Mosaic Law required them to gather, in Jerusalem. The temple courts were filled with worshippers, including the disciples, for they came daily to the temple to pray. Most likely, the disciples were in one of the houses along the wall of the court yard of the temple.
“They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.” The crowd not only heard but now, they were seeing what looked like tongues of fire resting on the disciples. This should remind you of the burning bush Moses saw which did not burn up. John the Baptist said one would come who would baptize them with the Holy Spirit and fire, Luke 3:16. Even Jesus said that He must leave for the Holy Spirit to come.
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” When the tongue separated, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. They were receiving power from on high just as Jesus had promised ten days earlier. This phenomenon drew the crowd to the disciples. The result being the disciples began to speak languages they had not learned; for each individual heard in their own language the message of salvation. The next verses go into detail about what the crowd heard and saw. Peter spoke about how Jesus is the Messiah and through Him, there is salvation for all who will accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. When the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, a new age began for God’s people. It is the day when the Church was born. On this day the Church began by God adding 3000 souls.
