CANTON — Mom and daughter duo Glenda Beadnell and Sylvia Adams love baking.
They love baking so much they decided to open up Sweet Tooth, a bakery in Canton that dotes delicious cakes for all occasions, cookies, cupcakes and more.
“We celebrated 10 years last year and are close to our 11th year,” said Glenda. “It was her (Sylvia’s) idea. I started making cakes for her when she was three. I still use the same recipe for icing.”
The family, originally from Florida, moved back to the area and started their bakery.
“I’ve always liked baking, but cake decorating wasn’t something I got hard into until we moved up here,” said Sylvia.
Baking has always been a part of both mom and daughter’s life. Sylvia remembers baking with a friend as a child.
“A friend of mine, we would bake all the time together. We loved it. Especially Christmastime. We would bake cookies and make fudge and watch Christmas movies,” said Sylvia.
The duo love working together and love to create new and exciting cakes together, while also bouncing new ideas off each other to create new projects.
“You can learn to make anything on YouTube,” said Glenda. “And we have so much equipment, we will sometimes forget what we have,” she continued, pointing to cake pans.
So far this year, they have 20 weddings scheduled. A lot goes into planning a wedding cake. They start with a free consultation and tasting for the client.
“We have all of our flavors of cake and icing ready for them to taste when they get here,” said Glenda.
“We talk about all the details,” Sylvia added, “From the venue, to delivery time. We go through all the details in one go, and it just makes it easier because there are a lot of expectations for a wedding cake.”
Flavors of cake include red velvet, lemon, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, peanut butter, yellow, spice. They also do custom flavors as well such as cookies and cream and carrot cake. They make their own fondant.
The client will leave after choosing a cake and they take a celebratory photo with a decorate plate that says “We said yes to the cake.”
For Glenda and Sylvia, making sure the client has “the experience” is everything, especially with weddings.
Weddings are not their only bookings, though. They also receive orders for baby showers, birthday parties, special gatherings and more.
“We have a lot of clients from Williamsport, the valley area, and people that moved from the Canton area and have parents pick their orders up for them,” said Sylvia.
Both Glenda and Sylvia love to get creative in the kitchen too.
“We’ll try about anything,” Glenda laughs.
“We’ve done a lot of special requests,” said Sylvia, noting the many special cakes they have made.
Some of these styles include a Nintendo gaming console (to scale), a three-tiered cake with different themes, a 3D horse cake, a galaxy cake, a cat cake and a life-size cake of Chucky (the doll).
“That was really hard to do,” said Sylvia. “We welcome things that we don’t typically do all the time.”
They also make cookies, cake pops, cupcakes and more. The opportunities are endless with these two!
When asked what their favorite aspects of the job was, both responded with watching the families grow throughout time.
“My favorite part is that we keep doing family events and seeing the kids growing up,” said Sylvia.
“When someone really shows excitement in their cakes when they pick them up,” said Glenda.
They love when they receive client pictures of the cakes they make too.
