“The CSA program benefits families who want to eat healthier from local sources,” explained Sheila Russell, owner of Russell Sprouts Farm. By registering and paying early in the season, CSA members receive six to eight varieties of fresh produce for 10 or 20 weeks. “They also save money by paying a fraction of what they pay at the grocery store for the same organically raised produce,” Russell added.
Now in its fifth season, Russell Sprouts Farm will have CSA pickup locations in five local communities: Towanda, Sayre, Wyalusing, Canton and Rome. This year members may choose from two share sizes, weekly or biweekly delivery, and add-on options, such as farm-fresh eggs, local meat and dairy products. The membership cost for a half share (10 weeks of produce) is $250; regular share (20 weeks of produce), $455 and family share, $750.
“Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for anyone who wants to enjoy our farm fresh produce,” she said. With this in mind, Russell created a new “Friends of the Farm” discount card for frequent shoppers or those who buy in bulk. Discount cards are available in any amount over $100, and give cardholders a 10 percent discount on each purchase of produce.
The farm is located on Rt. 187 just outside of Rome, between Wysox and Nichols. Farm store on Friday, May 8… just in time for Mother’s Day! This season, store hours will be Thursday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
