A stray cat that was having food put out for it started walking in circles. It was brought to a veterinary clinic where it was submitted for rabies testing. The cat tested positive for rabies at the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory in Harrisburg.
Two people were exposed to the cat and are receiving post exposure treatment.
No domestic animals that are owned by any individuals appear to have been exposed to this cat. However, there are other wild (feral) cats in the area and people should be advised to avoid contact with all wild animals including feral cats.
PA law requires all dogs and non-feral cats to be vaccinated against rabies within 4 weeks after the date the dog or cat attains 12 weeks of age. For more information, visit www.agriculture.state.pa.us and search “rabies.”
