Memorial Day May 25, as OLD GLORY waved freely in the breeze and with the sun sparkling over head in a beautiful blue sky, some 60 family members gathered together in the same Hall at North Union as were the two met.
Ron Taylor welcomed everyone. The tables were covered with white table clothes and flag napkins at each setting, red, white and blue stars decorated the centers of the tables.
Ron asked each service member to stand and then all bowed for in a Moment Of Silence Pray". They said the 'Pledge Of Allegiance". Then Duane Taylor asked the blessing for the meal.
A feast to fill the taste buds awaited as many good cooks provided yummy treats to pick from. As they ate a free will offering was collected to help defray expenses, etc..
Two decorated sheet cakes were on display prior dessert time. One cake said "Welcomed Relatives" and the other being a Birthday Cake honoring Charlie Porter baked by his daughter Diane. They all sang Happy Birthday to everyone and to Charlie as well.
Family members came from as far away as Hawaii, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and Maine. Ages ranging from 1 year old to nearing 90.
An afternoon of reminiscing, visiting , story telling, old photo albums and Daune told a brief history of the family and other silly stories. Touring of the North Union Church and to see the new pews that a few family members donated funds to purchase and also the new carpet that was installed recently.
They also heard about the old church that once faced the Old Landon Road, which now runs behind the building. It was turned around inside to allow it once again to face the newly built highway (Rt. 414). The way it stands and looks today.
Cards were signed by family members to be sent out to missing members due to illness or other to Bud Mitstifer and Doris Porter.
Members who helped pull this together were Anita Evens, Ron Taylor, Mary Porter, Lindsay Rathbun, Viola Metzger, and Duane Taylor and many other helping hands through out the days event.
Some of the family enjoyed hiking to Parker's Pond and taking in it's beauty surrounding it there as well.
It was a great day and time as we all enjoyed being together as one big happy family.
