TROY — Pivot Physical Therapy in Troy is beginning a new Joint Replacement Camp.
Starting Aug. 18, the camp will run every third Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Troy branch on Route 6, just outside of Troy.
Clinic Director and Physical Therapist Marcus Redline is heading the program, hoping to help educate the public about the procedure of joint replacement.
“I think it’s going to be a big thing just to get education out to people so they feel comfortable knowing what they are getting into and knowing what options they have before surgery and then immediately after surgery,” said Redline.
The joint replacement camp is free to anyone interested and is aimed for those who are scheduled or plan to schedule a total joint replacement.
“Having patients come in and talk about their pain or difficulties they’re having and not really knowing the next step is what ultimately drove the decision to begin this,” said Redline. “They’re here for therapy because they need to get stronger, but what if just getting stronger isn’t working? Or what if the pain is still there? Giving them the educational background of what is out there and what is available, doctors in our area, and more, will help.”
Redline says post-op patients often come for therapy and are blown away by the amount of pain they were in, that they did not expect.
“I think that educational aspect will help their outcomes too. The more you know about stuff, the more at-ease you feel,” said Redline. “Fear and anxiety breed pain.”
Patients will learn about the surgical process, recovery time frame, expectations, therapy options, prehab, home health and outpatient therapy, according to Pivot’s press release.
“If you come to one, you don’t necessarily have to come to the next one because it’s going to generally be the same information,” said Redline. “If a patient knows they have a surgery scheduled in September, maybe they want to come to the August one.”
Redline says he will continue the camp indefinitely as long as he finds interest in the camp and attendance. Anyone in the surrounding area is welcome to attend the camp.
“As long as I have one person interested and attending the session, I will be there,” said Redline.
Redline’s ultimate goal is to help people, current patients or not.
“I feel there is a need for this in the community so I wanted to put something together to help people feel less anxious about what they are getting into. Some people might even be so afraid to the point that they will avoid a life-changing surgery. Hopefully this will help push them in a better direction.”
Walk-ins are welcomed, however, registration is preferred.

“Allowing the patients to understand the entire joint replacement process will improve outcomes and compliance,” said Pivot CEO Chris Throckmorton. “There are many questions prior to these types of surgeries. At Pivot, we want to be the place where patients go to receive all the information.”
