A daughter of Matthew and Angela Hess, she was on high honor roll all four years of high school, a National Honor Society member as a junior and senior and a Spanish Honor Society member as a senior. Miss Hess was a four-year member of student council, the volleyball and track and field teams and chorus; a three-year member of band, Spanish Club and orchestra; and was in the Women’s Select Choir as a junior and senior. She was chosen to compete in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association district chorus for three years and regional chorus her senior year; was in county chorus for three years and county band for two years. She was a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador as a sophomore, a member of the Giving Tree Club as a senior and was named a student of the month all four years of high school, student of the semester in her junior year and was an Athletic and Academic Letterman. Miss Hess is active in her church youth group, sings on the church worship team and has been on mission trips to Uganda through Christian Life Ministries and to Peru and Costa Rica through Never the Same Missions. This fall, she will attend Millersville University of Pennsylvania and major in Early Childhood Education. | The daughter of Bradley and Brenda Zechman, she was four-year member of student council serving as president as a senior and on honor roll all four years of high school. Miss Zechman is a three-year member of German Club and a two-year member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club and yearbook staff and was Class of 2015 secretary as a sophomore and president as a junior. She was on prom court as a junior and is active in the Fellowship Bible Church Youth Group. Miss Zechman earned the Jordan Fitzwater Memorial Citizenship Award and a Provost’s Scholarship from Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pa. This fall, she will attend Messiah College and major in occupational therapy. | While in Wellsboro, the 32 queen candidates will enjoy a full weekend of activities. They will gather at noon Friday, June 19 on the front steps of the Tioga County Courthouse for the official welcome. The young ladies will go to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon for a picnic lunch and tour. At 5 p.m., the candidates will introduce themselves at the free Queen's Preview and Concert on the outdoor stage at the Deane Center and then join the audience to enjoy music by Los Blancos, a Syracuse, N.Y. band. Bring lawn chairs. Saturday afternoon, June 20, the young ladies will ride on professionally designed floats in the Laurel Festival parade. Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. the coronation of the 2015 Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen will be at the Deane Center's Coolidge Theatre. The 74th Laurel Festival begins Saturday, June 13 with Family Day on The Green in downtown Wellsboro and continues during the week with a pet parade, concerts, juried arts and crafts fair and the International Street of Foods. The Laurel Parade at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20 features the Pennsylvania Bucktails, drum and bugle corps, bagpipers, high school bands, vintage cars, floats and more. The festival concludes Sunday morning with the Union Church service on The Green. Tickets for the coronation ceremony are available at the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce at 114 Main Street in Wellsboro or at the door. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students. |
