CANTON — Having not only a healthy body, but a healthy state of mind is important for Canton’s Jenn Kropf.
In 2005, Kropf decided she wanted to get back into shape and shed some baby weight after having her third child. While she was getting in shape, she received her instructor certification, giving her the tools necessary to help others around her.
“I could get all the material and workouts and it turned out to be this thing that I really enjoyed doing,” said Kropf. “And then I had an opportunity to teach it in town and to people who wanted to do the classes. I started out with a cardio kick boxing class,” she said.
In 2021, Kropf now spends two nights and a Wednesday morning giving yoga and fitness instruction to Bradford County residents.
On Monday evenings, she spends her time teaching PiYo at the Canton Fitness Center for $7/class.
PiYo classes are designed to incorporate yoga and pilates. It was designed by Chalene Johnson. It is a low-impact workout that strengthens and sculpts the body while enhancing flexibility.
“Johnson added more upbeat music to it so there’s different sections, like warming up and working on the lower body, and a cardio section, so you have a flow of lots of yoga movements. It slows down, and there’s a core section in some stretching and a cool down. I like that I can work my whole body head and toe in an hour,” said Kropf, “Coming to a live class is beneficial because instructors are able to modify the class to your needs and durability.”
On Monday nights, she also does “Soul Yoga,” a Christian-centered yoga at the Ulster Rec Center at 7:30 p.m. The class costs $5.
The class is also available on Wednesday mornings at 6 a.m.
“Wednesday mornings, it’s a ZOOM class. We usually start off with a little prayer, Bible verses or give them something to think about during class and end with prayer,” she said. “We just keep the focus on Jesus. It’s been a blessing. It’s a great way to start the day.. get your body moving and get some scripture.”
Cost for this class is $5, or $25 for six weeks.
Newly-added to Kropf’s schedule is a beginners yoga class on Thursday evenings at The Troy Sale Barn, beginning at 6 p.m. Cost for this class is a suggested $10 donation. So far, she’s had a turnout of 22 people attend the class.
She also recently started Chair Yoga at the Troy Sale Barn, which is beginner/gentle yoga using a chair to help support, and also for balance. Participants need to bring a yoga mat and water. Chairs are provided.
