Donning their personally decorated chef hats, kids took turns identifying and grouping types of food into categories, discovering what makes grains “whole” and protein “lean.” Following an introduction to My Plate by registered dietitian Jen Davis, a guide to building a well-portioned plate at each meal, the group bonded over building their own healthy plates, creating good-tasting and good-for-you treats.
“Since kids are often more open to trying a new dish when they feel included, Kids in the Kitchen gives them a hands-on role in building healthy pitas, butterfly bites and apple pies,” explains registered dietitian Lisa Pietropola, Director of Nutrition Services at Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH).
At the end of each session, families received giveaways, snacks and recipe cards to take home. For more information on Kids in the Kitchen or SSMH, visit suquehannahealth.org.
