CANTON — Though the application period is over, The Giving Tree committee is still seeking donations for this year’s program.
Last year, donations helped 88 local families in need for Christmas and provided toys and other gifts to children in the school district.
“I am the National Honor Society adviser, and this Society helps with The Giving Tree,” said Stacey Segur. “In NHS, the students wrap the Christmas presents that are donated from community members to families. Also, Deanna Watkins, an Administrative Assistant in the CASD Administration Office, assists with organizing the paperwork and donations for The Giving Tree.”
The Giving Tree was originally established by the Chamber of Commerce in 1996 as an annual charitable program. In recent years, the school district has taken over the program, providing what they call “elf power” in ensuring that the need to local children and families is met.
Donations can be monetary or in the form of “adopting” a family, child, or part of a family. Donors can purchase gifts for that specific child or family and wrap them.
Donors will receive a shopping list from the administrative office with the size and needs of that family. Items of need include socks, underwear, pajamas, slippers, robes, pants, shirts and more.
Bags are provided to donors by the school and gifts are placed in there, either wrapped or not wrapped. Donations must be dropped off to the school by Monday, Dec. 14. The value of gifts should be approximately $125/child.
“Due to COVID, Deanna and I thought that The Giving Tree would have an increase in the amount of families who need help during the holidays,” said Segur. “However, there has been a decrease since some families are getting help elsewhere or becoming employed due to job openings/opportunities. Most families who are seeking help have experienced a lay off or company shutdown/closure.”
Gift donations are given to parents of the families on Dec. 21.
“The most rewarding part is knowing that we, as an organization, school, and community, are helping those who need it. Also, when people come to pick up the gifts, you can see positive expressions on their faces that are filled with happiness and gratefulness,” said Segur.
