Everyone is invited to attend this meaningful service as “We Remember” and honor all who have given the ultimate sacrifice and those who are still with us, and as we Celebrate America!
Troy
The Memorial Day parade starts at 9 a.m. This year, it will begin from the Baptist Church on Canton Street. This is to limit the length of time needed for the parade.
This year we again have the “Step Off The Curb” program where our students lead and invite the community to show support by joining in at the end of the parade as citizens did after the Civil War.
People wishing to March as a group may arrive around 8:30-8:45 a.m. at the church parking lot to line up, floats and trucks are being replaced this year with groups actually marching with the flag draped coffin.
The parade, and citizens that step off the curb will be led by our Veterans and the Troy High School Band as well as students enlisting in the services. The parade will be marching to Davison Green.
The guest speaker this year is Ryan Schrader from the High School, an Ex-Navy Submarine man.
Memorial Day - Originally called Decoration Day, it is celebrated the final Monday in May. The purpose of this day is to remember those who died while serving in our armed forces. While many enjoy this day as the beginning of summer, it is important to focus on the solemn noncelebratory nature of a day, while remembering those that were the treasures we paid as the high cost of our freedom. We don’t laugh and play, or shoot off fireworks, we remove our hat with hand over hearts as we think of those that went before.
Canton
Canton will host a Memorial Day parade to honor the local veterans on Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m.
The route will be leaving East Union Street between North Center Street and North Minnequa Avenue; traversing north on North Center Street then east on East Carson Street to south on North Minnequa Avenue to east on East Union Street to south on North Washington Street crossing East Main Street to South Washington Street to east on East Second Street to north on Fassett Street across East Main Street to Mosser Avenue (was Chestnut Street) back to East Union Street to starting point.
The Canton Borough Police Department will be leading the parade, the Warrior Marching Band and Boy Scouts will be participating (as long as school is in session), and the Canton Fire Department and Western Alliance Emergency Services will be participating.
Bring out your Veteran to ride and/or walk in the parade; this parade is about them!
There will be no ceremony afterwards at the War Memorial Park, so let’s come out and have our Veterans be part of the parade and let’s come out and support our Veterans by watching the parade.
