Chief May reported that the Firemen's Relief Association was in the process of replacing its obsolete "jaws of life" unit. They are looking at different brands and manufacturers are demonstrating their products.
The department is awaiting the $10,000 promised by the County Commissioners to each fire and ambulance company in the county. This will be paid with Impact Fees.
The base radio has been repaired and is in operation.
The Preventive Maintenance on the vehicles has been completed with no major issues.
The ladder truck has been recertified. The nozzle on the aerial unit was damaged and is being completely remanufactured. A loaner is being used so the unit is in service. Cost of the repair is $4,000, which is considerably less than the cost of a new nozzle. An insurance claim has been filed.
Several firefighters are taking an EMT class, which is coming along well. After a Practical Class, they are to receive their certification.
Chief May said that Canton, similar to many other companies, is having issues with recruiting and retention of members. "We are feeling good, but are not where we would like to be…we are always looking for new members."
Chief May also informed the directors that the Innes Hose Company was in the process of adopting a new "social media" policy. It will be reflected in the by-laws.
The department intends to replace the ladder truck in the next couple of years while the vehicle still is covered under warranty. A ladder truck out of New Jersey may be available at that time.
In addition to their usual chores and calls of service, the fire fighters are busy taking various training courses, and the entire department and other volunteers are preparing for the Firemen's Fair, which will be held July 7 to 11.
