The Canton Fire Department Board of Directors held its October meeting with Fire Chief J. Scott May, Deputy Chief George Jennings, Assistant Chief Ray Miller, Trustee Carl Hartford, President Rich Bardo, Secretary Sherry Miller, Treasurer Jodie Bardo and municipal representatives Darryl Jannone, Ed Sheaffer, Marvin Woodward and Mark McMurray. The minutes of the August meeting were approved and $14,699.28 in paid invoices were approved for payment, including audit fees of $1,225 to Don White and $2,687.91 for repairs to the lean-to equipment shed attached to the fire station. $6,536.35 in invoices to be paid were approved, including another $117.19 for materials for the lean-to repair. These Balances were reported: Checking, $11,441.34; Savings, $50,515.61; Reserve, $1,822.23. Chief May reported that September was a "busy, busy month," with several motor vehicle accidents that required considerable time on scene. Twice during the month personnel were on the scene of one accident when they received a call to a second accident. The department's application for the federal grant was denied, but Chief May was heartened because the application advanced quite far through the peer review process. "We made it almost to the end," Chief May said, adding that another application will be filed for the next grant round. The department is seeking $200,000 to replace the Cascade air system. The airpacks presently in service have a seven-year life. Canton has received grants under this program twice in the past. The Innes Hose Company membership voted to use the $10,000 grant received from the Bradford County Commissioners to purchase a new thermal imaging camera. The cost is $12,640 and the remainder of the cost will be shared between the Relief Association and fundraising revenue. Chief May said that the fire company budget is on track with expectations. Mr. Jannone said that the "budget is well articluated and well-presented." Chief May said "We don't perceive an issue of going over our budget." He also said that little change was expected in next year's budget, and the fire company plans to have a representative at the municipal meetings in November to inform them and answer questions. The preventive maintenance program has been completed. A new valve for the tanker is to be delivered from Campbell Supply. Mr. Bardo expressed regret that some of the municipalities fail to send representatives to the board meetings, thus missing the opportunity to make their voices heard.
