Axe Women, the centerpiece of the touring division of the Pro Timber Sports company based in Bar Harbor, Maine, features world class performances by lumberjills of the highest caliber, some who are the most recent World Champions in Axe Throw, Underhand Chop and Standing Block Chop.
Witness Underhand Chopping, where athletes stand on top of a log and use a 6 pound razor sharp axe, chopping just inches from their feet to ‘blaze’ through the wood from one side to the other.
Then there’s the Cross-Cut Sawing, with two to four Axe Women Cross-Cut saw through a slice of wood using a 5'6" long double-handled state-of-the-art Peg & Rakers saws.
Axe Throwing is a prime example of skill and accuracy as the gals throw a 2.5 pound double-headed axe at a target 5 feet off the ground 20 feet away. Two of the Axe Women are World Champions in this event.
Two STIHL modified stock chain saws are used in the Hot Sawing event, with two Axe Women competing in a 2 cut race involving down and up cuts. Loud and fast, the ‘souped’ up saws are not only hot looking but also hot and very dangerous to operate at these speeds as evidence by the chaps the Axe Women have to wear while performing this competition.
Log Rolling has always been a real crowd pleaser, as well. Two Axe Women demonstrate agility, perseverance and balance to stay atop a spinning Western Red Cedar log. One of the hardest skills to master, this event is an exciting ride from beginning to end.
Lumberjill lessons may be offered in between the Axe Women Logger’s shows with opportunity for fair attendees to take part and learn two totally different skills: Log Rolling and Ax Throwing. A nominal fee may be charged to participate in learning these skills. Participants may also be required to sign a two page wavier in advance. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian to fill out and sign the wavier.
