CANTON — The Canton Borough Water Authority’s monthly meeting was held July 13.
When discussing maintenance, it was brought before the board that the grit system had plugged again in the treatment plant. The system had been built with a design flaw that can cause this to continue to happen and a blower will have to be purchased and installed to mitigate this.
A service line on Brann Street had been replaced and work on Troy Street near the Canton Independent/Sentinel office to fix leaks should help staunch some of the borough’s water loss.
In the pursuit of fixing the water leaks, Manager Ryan Machmer met with representatives of Exeter Supply for a demonstration of a leak detection system. The results of the test showed 40% confidence that there was a leak in the Brann Street line, which is far below what was hoped.
The board will continue to search for better detection systems as well as controlled shut downs of lines to find leaks. The water authority tracked leaks in the amount of 339,000 gallons per day for the month of June, with optimism that the Brann Street and Troy Street work will be the first steps in addressing the water loss.
Water Authority members Neil Nelsen and Frank Watson have been reading through the Water Authority regulations in an attempt to streamline and simplify confusing parts. Also discussed was selling Service Plans to customers who run a sewage grinder pump on their septic system. Grinder pump repair is one of the main calls the Water Authority receives.
Often the problem is as simple as someone accidentally flushing something that jams up the pump like cloth or plastic. It is believed that selling a service plan for a few dollars a month will help offset the cost of the callouts and help customers get financially invested in their pump’s wellbeing. The service plan would be made available to any current customers and made mandatory to new grinder pump customers.
The Water Authority sold 418,000 gallons of bulk water in June worth $5,020. Bradford County Collections forwarded the Water Authority its $600 check from Brenda Mott for the month of June. Mott has returned $118,795.21 and still owes $210,248.69.
