Publisher and sports reporter Joseph Carroen won second place in the category sports beat reporting, with his entry of Troy boys winning over Wyalusing 54-46 and highlighting that Seymour is state champion. Carreon also took home an honorable mention in the sports action photo category. The award-winning photo was of Troy’s Ty Barrett as he sinks a fadeaway in the NTL Showdown last year.
The next award was a group effort. Carreon, along with WIGGLE’S (WHGL100) Shane Wilber and Ed Weaver won first place with a special section, known as their Northern Tier League Now Podcast.
Lastly, managing editor Rachel Heitzenrater took home a first place win for front page design. The front page was from a January 2020 front page which included Croman and Canton Elementary students, school news and more.
“I’m really really proud of my staff. This is a team accomplishment,” said Carreon. “They bought in to what my vision was for the paper and ran with. To earn a first place award for the papers layout is incredible. We took a lot of heat from some about the new look we installed nearly two years and to be recognized for it is a great feeling. We still want to get better though. We are always looking to improve the product and we want to remain the trusted news source for the Canton-Troy and surrounding areas.”
The Canton Independent Sentinel and Troy Gazette Register would like to thank those that read the paper that helped make this award possible. Carreon says he plans to enter the yearly contest next year as well.
