There used to be places in Asia, (maybe still) where young men would catch song birds and put them in homemade wooden cages. The idea would be to sell the bird to someone in order for them to have the privilege of setting it free. I’m sure that it brings a feeling of satisfaction when you open the cage door and the bird escapes. I bet however, that the joy in the bird is far greater!
What’s happening to me? I feel like I’m half human and half computer. I do my weekly-worship-services in front of a camera lens, sit at my desk in front of two computer monitors, satisfy my curiosity by going to Google and Wikipedia. Even that, is not going all that well for me. When I checked my laptop to see how Barbara Hale (Della Street, on Perry Mason) was doing, a message came up saying, “Barbara Hale died 15 minutes ago.” Just missed her, I guess. I don’t get hugs from the kids anymore. I do get hugs from Gloria. It often makes me feel bad for my friends whose spouses have died. I hand the church mail to a “masked lady.” I feel a little like “Seven of Nine” who escaped from the Borg –and now exists as half human and half computer.
“When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.” Luke 24:50-53, New International Version. Now, it is forty days since Jesus rose from the grave. During that time Jesus appeared to the disciples and others giving them proof He is the same individual which they knew before the crucifixion. Jesus continued teaching the disciples, preparing them to be witnesses of the truth and to proclaim the Good News, Jesus is the Messiah and the Redeemer for all who will come to Him. Before the disciples could begin their mission, it was necessary for Jesus to return to heaven for the Holy Spirit to come to give them power to do their mission.

Firehouse Subs recently returned to Troy. After setting up on our Western Alliance parking lot on April 24, 25 and 26 Christian Kovacs and Jamie Mullen, from Firehouse Subs, were able to present us with a check for $1,631. Firehouse Subs donate a portion of every sale to support local First Responders. Last year they donated $64,000 to local First Responders. The overwhelming support from our communities made this donation possible. by Rusty Mitchum
I was asked by a pretty lady the other day if I would rerun this old story. Well, you know me; I can’t turn down a pretty lady, so here it is. I don’t know if y’all know it or not, but I have a motorcycle. Actually, I have three motorcycles, but the one I want to tell you about, is the one my wife Janet got me for Christmas a couple of years ago. It’s a Harley. I’ve always wanted a Harley and was too cheap to get one myself, so she got it for me. I love it. I named her Dixie. What? Don’t y’all name your stuff? Anywho, like I said, I love Dixie. When I’m home, and the weather cooperates, Janet and I take off on her. We usually don’t go off on long trips, ‘cause I’m gone a lot, but we ride her when we can. There are a lot of Harley riders out there who think that if you don’t ride a Harley, then you aren’t a real biker. Then, there are some bikers who think that if you ride a Harley, you’re ridin’ a piece of junk. Well, I think all motorcycles are cool. I don’t care what kind they are. Don’t get me wrong, Harley’s are my favorite, but just because they’re my favorite, doesn’t mean they’re everybody’s. Out of all of my motorcycle friends, there are only a few who ride Harleys, and some of their bikes are a lot prettier than mine. Now, the reason I’m tellin’ y’all this, is because of what happened to me the other day. On Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, the Private Silas Gore Camp #141 of the Department of Pennsylvania of the Sons of Union Veterans will hold an event on the green at East Smithfield.
The members of the post will “stand guard” over the East Smithfield monument and the gravestones of Civil War soldiers in the adjacent cemetery in an effort to honor the sacrifice of all those mortal soles who so bravely left their hearths and homes to serve our country. The event will be only an hour in duration, from 2–3 p.m, immediately followed by the Gore Camp members participating in the nationwide moment of silence for all fallen veterans. The general public is invited to attend. For more information regarding the event’s time, location and other items of interest regarding the Gore Camp and local Civil War history, please visit SilasGoreCamp.org. New Covenant Academy will be hosting an online auction on Tuesday, June 2 through Thursday, June 4, in replacement of the NCA Annual Benefit and Auction that the school has hosted for more than 40 years.
