Now '56'ers - our annual picnic will be August 22 at Bulkley's pond. Come at noon, will eat around o'clock. Bring a dish to pass. Notice the date change. Due to circumstances the date had to changed. Try to make it. By John Shaffer Flags have been in the news recently more that usual. President Obama ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor the Marines and the sailor who were murdered at Chattanooga. The President did not lead on this issue – he didn’t exactly follow. It would be more accurate to say he trailed, and far behind.Congress already had lowered the flag in homage to the victims, as had the governors of at least six states. We don’t want to characterize his delay, but he has a tendency not to get involved with issues unless they serve his ideological proclivities; and given that he refuses to call terrorism by that name, we are not shocked that he wasn’t very interested in honoring its victims.
By John Shaffer America suffered another atrocity a few days ago when a man murdered four Marines and a Sailor at a reserve installation in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The incident still is under investigation, and the President has described the killings as “heartbreaking.” That’s a word that we would think better used when a child’s puppy is hit by a car or a man dies on his honeymoon. It doesn’t have the proper ring to describe an illegal act of violence. The President also called them "senseless," as if it was impossible to figure out why it happened. Perhaps if the President was not so reluctant to use the words “Islamic” or “terrorism” he would understand it better.
By Charles Rockwell As I take pen in hand, truly I do, the thought comes to me, "Do ten-year-old boys still yearn to go overnight in a tent?"
Ralph Summers, Ed Payne, and I were good neighborhood pals and probably about ten years old. We decided to borrow my older brother Martin's pup tent. He was an active Boy Scout. The tent was to be in the horse pasture on the bank of the Mill Race under a large beech tree. Six trivia questions to see how much history you really know.
Be honest; it's kind of fun and revealing. If you don't know the answer make your best guess. Answer all of the questions (no cheating) before looking at the answers. And, no, the answers to these questions aren't all Barack Obama. By Canton Fitness Center Inflammation: More Serious Than You Think
Many people think of inflammation as something that happens when you get a sprain, bump or bruise and it swells up. However, that is not the only type of inflammation. The much more deadly kind of inflammation is chronic inflammation, which has been shown to lead to chronic illness. The reality of it is, many of these conditions can be prevented. An article on inflammation quoted one doctor as saying, “One in two of us have a chronic illness, and seven out of 10 deaths are caused by chronic disease, which means we have chronic inflammation.” These diseases start with a poor diet, which in turn, leads to inflammation. Paige Slater called on Vi and Ron, Wednesday afternoon around 4 o'clock to let them know that she made it to Delaware. She went to the beach with her mom and sister, Terri and Serenity Fulford. Oh yes, grandma Linda went too. Paige was so excited that she saw some dolphins. She got home Saturday night around 8:00 p.m. The Strange Things About our World
Centuries ago, Christian weddings were only allowed in a church. The Bride and Groom dressed in a specified clothing so they could be recognized by the invited guests. But the bridesmaids were dressed in clothing similar to the bride and the ushers were dressed almost exactly as the groom. By Evangelist Eric Smith “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” Ephesians 1: 4. The next portion of the sentence we are pursuing is verse 4. The whole sentence is verse 3 through verse 14 of Ephesians chapter 1. Notice how Paul used each word to express the message he gives every reader. In comparison, how we write and say each word makes a difference to what is understood. Paul desired we understand a relationship with Jesus Christ is the key to where each individual will spend eternity.
By Jim Lewis Years ago when I lived in Florida, a next door neighbor asked me if I wanted to go to church with her the following Sunday. Although she was friendly and asked nicely, I’ll never forget her reaction to my response. After I politely turned her down she replied, “Well I won’t think any less of you then.” Boy did that turn me off. I can remember thinking for the longest time, “Well I won’t think any less of you for going then!” Since then I have discovered that her perspective was way off. Christianity is not an, “I’m better than you” situation. In fact, it is just the opposite.
By Anna Belle Leonard The Gillett Senior Citizens enjoyed balmy weather when they met on July 9th. Mary Mc Kerrow opened the meeting with a list of things to look forward to.
On July 23rd, Robin Vanvalkenburg will be here again with the farmer's market vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables for those who didn't get one before The Senior -Night -Out scheduled for the 25th is canceled and we will go to breakfast at the Wellsburg Diner at 9 a.m. on July 22nd instead. By Terren Smith Hi all, how was your week?
A lot of people to pray for: Randy Burkholtzer is in the hospital; Sherri Weed was in the hospital; Flora Wheeler is very sick; Dick Strobridge had a procedure done at the hospital, but is now home and doing OK; and Charlotte Stevens had laser to her eye and is doing well. Bucky and Maryann Dunbar had company; their daughter Karen came for a visit. Maryann said that they were having a good time together. As the official "crick" watcher for the southeast section of Alba Borough I can report that due to a whole bunch of rain recently said "crick" became a rip-roaring torrent of water for a couple of days. My first clue was the audible alarm system provided by Mother Nature. Some of the rocks nearest my garage actually bang together loud enough to alert anyone nearby that the "crick" is "gittin' up there." We had rapids, waterfalls and even a newly formed sandbar.
By Lorelei Colton We were finally blessed with a gorgeous weekend, weather wise, and I believe I heard one local tv newscaster say it had been 6 weeks since we had a “rain free” weekend. Rain has been one of the main topics of discussion lately, whether I am at work, at church, out running errands, or visiting with friends and neighbors. I’ve heard of instances where simple family gardens are having problems with mold forming on vegetables as they mature, and even rotting the plants before they have time to develop beyond blossoming. I talked to a farmer located in the central part of the county who had hundreds of acres of hay standing unable to get to, amounting to thousands (yes, thousands) of square bales not yet harvested, due to being unable to get onto wet, soggy fields. It’s those kinds of conversations that remind me to keep my yap shut about such petty things as a few moldy pea pods. Our neighbors the Hojnowski’s have been having much better luck apparently, as Tricia told me in church last Sunday that their barn’s haymow is almost full. They’ve worked steady during every “rain-free” hour they could.
