The sweet corn in our garden is now tasseling, and we’ve enjoyed several summer squash meals, plus been able to give many away. I stopped in at Canton’s Saturday morning farmer’s market and bought a delicious bright red tomato and bought some local sweet corn and enjoyed both immensely this past weekend. I’m also really looking forward to our neighbor’s red potatoes that will be ready soon. Theirs are the best around, in my opinion.
Rural Brotherhood is this coming Thursday, July 16th, hosted by the Grover Church of Christ, beginning at 7 PM. All are welcome.
Last Sunday’s special music at church was provided to us by Mark Antes. He is another returning favorite with a beautiful tenor voice who sang with the local gospel group “The Sounds of Glory”. Some of you may remember him singing a beautiful selection titled “I Can Only Imagine” at my mother Lucille’s funeral.
And yet another familiar topic of discussion with folks hither and yon, is the “STATE OF THE UNION”, or is that not “politically correct” to say either? Between conflicts over the Confederate flag and the rainbow flag, securing the border, folks not able to stand by their Christian beliefs on certain subjects without being sued, dissension in the local churches, “entitlements”, State and Federal taxes on every service and utility we “rent” – but yet we cannot claim that as a deduction on our income taxes, and of course, foreign affairs – not to mention the political saga regarding the 2016 Presidential election, and the daily accusations of SOMEONE – SOMEWHERE – IS PROBABLY A RACIST - sometimes it’s hard to believe that in these conversations we are actually talking about the United States of America! It’s depressing, aggravating, and down-right unbelievable. We need to pray for our nation and its leaders.
July 17, 1956, marks the anniversary of the opening of Disneyland, America’s first theme park, opening at Anaheim, California. July 19, 1865, marks the birthday of surgeon Charles Horace Mayo, one of the founders of the Mayo Clinic. On July 20, 1968, the first Special Olympics were held in Chicago. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong made his famous quote when landing on the moon: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Twenty-one and a half hours later Apollo XI astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, blasted off from the moon and returned to the command module piloted by Michael Collins. The lunar module’s lower section was left on the moon with a plaque that read, “Here men from planet Earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” July 23, 1904 is considered the birthday of the Ice Cream Cone, by the International Ice Cream Association. According to my almanac of wit & wisdom: “Fireflies in great numbers indicate fair weather.”
Quote by Vance Havner: “If you lack knowledge, go to school. If you lack wisdom, get on your knees.”
Food for thought: The heart has no secret which our conduct does not reveal.
