We are getting several estimates on the cost of changing the heating system from propane to natural gas.
By Anna Belle Leonard On June 18th the Gillett Senior Citizens welcomed a former leader, Joyce Stigerwalt and her husband Bruce, who were back for a visit. Our present leader, Mary McKerrow, made several announcements. The Center will be closed next week due to the Senior picnic at Alparon Park in Troy. We are having a quilt raffle and tickets will be sold at the picnic as well as several other places.
We are getting several estimates on the cost of changing the heating system from propane to natural gas. By Charles Rockwell 1930 and 1931 were two of my better years. I had a great deal of freedom as long as I stayed within the boundaries set by my parents.
To the south was the creek and the bridge, not to be crossed. To the west the highway. To the north the end of the sidewalk and to the east, the wire fence, denoting the railroad property. The beneficial part was that I, at the age four and five, knew everyone of the neighbors and everyone knew me. They didn't mind if I dropped in for a visit. By Fr. Michael McCormick Dear Readers,
We had a bit of an exciting week here at St. Michael’s! Our big event was the celebration of my 30th anniversary to the priesthood. It was a wonderful! I wish to thank all those who made the party possible and all those who attended. Special thanks for all the wonderful cards, prayers and kind words. Cathy Asbury expertly planned and executed a dinner and party that I will remember the rest of my days. Rich and Marie Stankiewicz and their team cooked up a scrumptious meal. Everything was as perfect as it gets in this life! By William Bower
By Stratton "Lefty" Schaeffer The Joe Hill Debutante Ball High society has many long standing traditions and one of them is the annual Debutante Ball. A debutante is a young lady from an aristocratic or upper class family who has reached the age of maturity and is introduced to society at a formal “debut”presentation. Debut presentations vary by regional culture and are also frequently referenced as “debutante balls”. These balls are elaborate formal affairs and involve not only “debs” but other family members, escorts, chauffeurs, and ushers, as well. One of the most exclusive debutante balls in the United states is the International Debutante Ball at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, where girls from families with great wealth, are presented at the ball. Facts About Pennsylvania - 2015 Edition
We live in a great state; some of us would put up a strong argument that where we live in upstate Pennsylvania, is the best part of the state. Having stated that, there is a lot to be learned about Pennsylvania and there are resources available to anyone free of charge. I am looking at the publication “Hello Pennsylvania, a Quick Tour of the Commonwealth,” printed by the State House of Representatives. There are all sorts of interesting facts in this and other publications that you can access at any State Representative office. Locally we have Matt Baker’s office in Troy and Tina Picket has an office in Towanda. By Rev. Kenneth Marple, M.A. Why Don't You Write About Fathers?
That was the question a friend asked, as we stood together in the grocery store check-out line this morning. At first I thought, "Nobody will read it; who wants to hear about fathers?" Anyway, so much research has been done on absentee fathers, dead-beat dads, the lack of quality father/child time, and how the lack of a father affects the masculinity of boys and the femininity of girls, that I feel like we dads ought to lay low. One recent study estimates that an average employed American father spends 20 hours a week in the presence of his children; but, only two hours actively interacting with them. By Anna Belle Leonard The Senior Citizens' meeting on June 11th began with the walking group going for their morning stroll around town on a beautiful sunny morning.
Helen Antes entertained some of the coffee klatch with stories of her recent cruise to London and Paris with her son and daughter-in-law. Robin Vanvalkenburg was here with the vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables. She gave each member a list of the places that honor them. By Terren Smith Hi everyone, how was your week? School is finally over. no more school buses to stop for.
When I went to school we had to walk to our bus stop. Now each kid gets picked up at their own driveway. It seems like June is half over. Time flies. Birthdays June 14, Tiffany Hart; 19th Dan Goodwin; 20th Pam Gowin and 22nd Shirley Greenough Jr. Anniversaries: 19th, Don and Mary Ellen Goodwin; 22nd, Curtis and Stephanie Fay. By Richard & Joyce Pratt We sure are having some summer weather with heat, humidity, thunderstorms, etc. Reminds me of 48 years ago in 1967 in late June leading up to the Granville Center flood. It started down through the Gulf taking out the Gulf Road, the corner of the Granville Center Grange Hall and all the kitchen, dishes, etc; two bridges, and a barn as well as cutting a channel across Rt. 514. It cut off all traffic through Granville Center and down through to Bailey Corners where many homes, barns, and the East Granville Church and on down to West Franklin and Franklindale where a bridge was also damaged on Rt. 414. The Troy Fire Dept. was called to rescue a family in the Sayles area where a bridge was gone on what is now Tube Road. Plus many other things I probably have forgotten. I do remember the story was the fire department didn't want to believe them because there was no flooding elsewhere.
By Evangelist Eric Smith “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:” Ephesians 1:2. In this verse Paul continues his greeting. In the original language verse one and two are one sentence. A form of this greeting, Paul uses in most of his letters. "Grace" was a normal Greek greeting and "peace" was the Jewish greeting. Each word written would bring about some point of teaching about their relationship with Jesus Christ. Beyond the fact of the Holy Spirit directing Paul with what to write, the using of these two terms would help reach both Jews and Gentiles. God selected Paul as an Apostle to the Gentiles, but Paul still was concerned about the faith of his own people, the Jews as he wrote in the Roman letter.
By Jim Lewis Have you seen in the movies where a field Chaplain is praying for a dying soldier on the battle field? In the Catholic faith, this is referred to as Last Rites. The way that I understand it, this is not necessary to get to Heaven, but is a means to better prepare your entry by confessing wrongs, acknowledging God for who He is and praying. I assume that this also helps comfort the dying person. All good things. Some native Indian tribes believe(d) that in order to enter the Spirit World, you have to proclaim your own personal death chant prior to dying. In both of these situations, they recognize something greater than themselves and the need to prepare one’s self for a life beyond here on earth. How about you? How do you look at it? Have you thought of it lately?
A Nice Clean Joke To Tell At Your Next Party
An old geezer, who had been a retired farmer for a long time, became very bored and decided to open a medical clinic. He put a sign up outside that said: Dr. Geezer's clinic. "Get your treatment for $500, if not cured get back $1,000." Doctor Young was positive that this old geezer didn't know beans about medicine and thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000. So he went to Dr. Geezer's clinic. Here is what transpired. By Esther Butcher I hope someone stops the rain soon. It seems like it’s on a roll now. We needed the rain, but we’ve had enough for a bit.
Dona, John and Lynda Beers went to Arkport, NY on Sunday to visit Tom Beers and family. Monday, Dona and Peggy went to Williamsport to meet up with Christine and Nancy for shopping and lunch. Sunday, Jami, Cameron and Damon were down to visit Grammy Cindy. Something actually happened on Sister Street this past week. My adjoining property owner and neighbor cut about eight acres of what he described as very good hay. Je asked me if he would be insane if he cut the whole filed as the threat of rain was very real for a couple of days. I think it was Wednesday when he asked. I told him to ask me on Thursday. After all I am not going to question a school teacher's sanity. Well, he cut it, and got away with it! He also had a large hole dug with a backhoe and used for some type of Ag or 4-H project and he filled the hole and removed a large stump. While digging about five or six feet below the stump he called me over to look at hat he discovered. It was a large drain pipe. Look to be about eight to ten inch, as we discussed what this could have been for. The infamous chicken facility that once stood nearby used a relatively small water supply line and no drain. Then the light bulb went off and I realized it was from the old creamery that stood on that site over 100 years ago. The old wagon path is still visible, the well is still there, and most of the foundation is intact, and now it's kinda neat to know the drain is still there. Not worth anything but it's still there.
