A record 363 posters were received this year from eight school districts across Bradford County including: Athens, Canton, Northeast, Sayre, St. Agnes, Towanda, Troy and Wyalusing. The remaining student winners who placed in the Top 10 will be recognized this Fall when school is back in session.
Sarah Gray, 5th grade student at Northeast Bradford Elementary School, was pleasantly surprised during a mid-day Zoom meeting with representatives from United Way of Bradford County and Northeast Bradford School District to announce she won First Place in the United Way 5th Grade School Poster Contest! Northeast Bradford School District Superintendent Mr. Clark, Elementary Principal Mr. Webster, and 5th grade teacher Mrs. Hughes joined in congratulating Sarah on her accomplishment.

jcarreon@myweeklysentinel.com CANTON — The Canton High School held their annual Sports Awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 20. The first award presented at the ceremony was the Ed Larcom Memorial Award. The Ed Larcom Memorial Award is given to a senior boy and girl, multi-sport athlete, who demonstrates qualities that Ed valued seeing in students during his 30+ years of involvement with Canton athletics. Including an exceptional off-season work ethic, pride in their school and who display a personable attitude with coaches, teammates, and fans. The female recipient of this year’s Ed Larcom Memorial award was Taylor Gilbert. The male recipient of this year’s Ed Larcom Memorial award was Zachary Rentzel. New Covenant Academy will be hosting an online auction on Tuesday, June 2 through Thursday, June 4, in replacement of the NCA Annual Benefit and Auction that the school has hosted for more than 40 years.
The annual fundraiser was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the school is going to instead use an on-line platform, CharityAuctionsToday.com for bidding from 12 a.m. June 2, to 11:59 a.m. June 4. Bidding can be done through following the link or accessing it through the NCA website (ncalions.org), Facebook or Instagram (@NCALions). Alysha Grimes of Monroeton was among the 52 University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society.
Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society open to students and faculty in all disciplines of the University. Juniors, seniors and graduate students, including students in doctoral level degree programs, who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service are eligible for membership. Appointments are made by the president of the University on the recommendation of the moderator and chapter members of the society, and no more than four percent of the junior and senior class may be admitted each year. The Scranton chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu was established in 1943 and is the oldest honor society at the University. Grimes is a graduate student at the Jesuit university. On Saturday, May 16, Kyle Schucker of Troy, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering / from the University of Mount Union. Schucker was one of 526 graduate and undergraduate students who were included in the University of Mount Union’s virtual graduate celebration. Joey Lackey Troy Intermediate School Grade 3 Joey assembled a wonderful piece of art. He used a variety of overlapping shapes to create depth, interest, and visual unity. Joey’s artwork displays a talented individual with strong skill level and craftsmanship. Joey used construction paper to complete his artwork. Collin Binford of Troy Junior/Senior High School was recently named a School Winners for the prestigious Wendy's® High School Heisman® Award which highlights exceptional high school seniors and their achievements in the classroom, on the field and in the community.
Collin will move on for consideration in the next stage of the program where they could be named a State Finalist. "We are honored to have one of our students recognized as some of the country's top student-athletes with the Wendy's High School Heisman name." said Rebecca Stanfield, Principal, 10-12 On October 16, first graders from Troy’s WR Croman elementary had a wonderful field trip that was sponsored by their PTSO.
Jamey Hoose, the Manager of Canton’s Pump and Pantry and a member of WR Croman PTSO welcomed all and taught the students the fine art of pizza making. The children had a wonderful time learning about pizza dough ingredients; making and eating their pizzas, all while locals drank coffee and watched. Current residents and former residents of the Bradford County area, this is your opportunity to purchase a bit of history, enjoy a game of cards, and help the Canton Elementary School raise funds to build a much needed playground.
Each student will be selling Bradford County Playing cards which have illustrations of local buildings and the 52 cards are colorized and digitally painted to bring local history back to life. The cards are made by Barclay Mountain Playing Card Company out of LeRoy. The Canton Area School District received $37,192.80 in earned income tax collections through Berkheimer in September.ere to edit.
