"May Day dates back to the time of the Celts. They lit bonfires to honor their sun god and welcome back spring. The Romans too, celebrated “Floralia” for 6 days to celebrate the end of winter. Many customs today date back to the Roman celebrations. The Greek celebrations began with the gathering of flowers and weaving them into wreaths and head garlands. Many other European countries began spring celebrations by decorating their homes with first-blooming flowers and selecting a Queen of May then dancing around a may pole.
"Flowers were very important to English celebrations, sometimes it has been renamed as garland day. The custom of “bringing in the May” was to go to the field early in the morning of May 1st and return with baskets of fresh flowers. Some children made Daisy Chains. Jack in the Green is s leaf-covered figure and is also a part of their celebrations. This leafy figure danced as the head of a parade of chimney sweeps that danced through the town and collected pennies.
"May Baskets are also popular in England. They are filled with flowers, candy, poems and hung on a front door. May Dolls too, can still be found in parts of Wales. The girls dress up a doll with many ribbons and flowers and carry it around on a small chair. These dolls were sometimes tied to the top of a may pole which the children danced around and wound ribbons into a braid.
"In many countries it is also a custom for women to wash their faces with early morning dew on May 1st. They believed by doing this it would not only improve their complexions but also bring them eternal youthfulness. The puritans persecuted anyone who participated in May Day customs, they preferred their children read the Bible all day on May 1st.
"May Day began as a welcome of spring but later, it gained political significance. Socialists in 1889 made May Day their Labor Day and renamed it in honor of the working Man. The United States has labor day in September and keeps may day as a time to celebrate spring, young love, and romance. May Day is not a national holiday but in Hawaii is does observe LEI day as a day to celebrate good luck and friendship by exchanging flower necklaces.
"In many American towns and cities, attempts were made to make mayday a Christian holiday. In many places, a may queen is crowned and then there is a parade that leads to a local church where the queen places her crown on the head of the statue of Mary.
"In Canton, we sing May Day songs, we crown a May King and Queen, we honor the Laurel king and queen. It is time to celebrate hope and joy. The emphasis is social solidarity, the senior girls coming together one final time. We will celebrate where they are going and what they have meant to us, as a community.
